Archimandrite Sergius Gajek, the Apostolic Visitator of the Byelorussian Greek Catholic Church (BGCC) was a guest at the (UGCC)Synod. He showed the current state of affairs and perspectives of development of the BGCC and provided information regarding the preparation of the beatification process of Antoniy Nemantsevych, Exarch of the BGCC in the last century.
On October 11, during the Divine Liturgy, in presence of members of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, His Beatitude Lubyr Cardinal Husar gave Archimandrite Sergius Gajek the right to carry a panagia and the right to bless people with the dikirie (ornamental pair candelabrum) and trikirie (ornamental branched candelabrum).

Yah, I read this and still don't have understand: what is this all about? I mean, what kind of priest gets such clearly and uniquely episcopal accoutrement as not only the panagia but also the tricky-dicky? I've heard of them being made archpriests, getting a mitre, and even, in rare cases (like Taft), being awarded double pectoral insignia, but where in legitimate Orthodox liturgical tradition did they find justification for granting of these things--or did they? Perhaps it's just a Uniate conjuring trick?

These additional honors are authentic, albeit rare, awards to archimandrites among the Orthodox.

Adam, I think that by bestowing these honorifics on Archimandrite Sergius, Major-Archbishop Lubomyer may have been trying to afford to the faithful of the Belarusan Church some vestige of a hierarchy, if only symbolic (an Apostolic Visitator is merely a "presence", not a hierarch); something Rome has neglected to do. Perhaps he sees a parallel to his own situation in regards to Major-Archbishop vis-a-vis Patriarch. Many years, Neil

Oh, good. Glad to hear from both of you. I didn't think His Beatitude was inclined to make these things up, but a couple of otherwise knowledgable Byzantine liturgical experts whom I consulted had never heard of the tricky-dicky in particular being awarded. Yes, Neil, I think you are right about Lubomyr's intent in awarding these distinctions.
Thanks for the clarification!

Dear Friends,
I used to have a mitre from Ethiopia.
I gave it to an OCA priest who has been receiving Ethiopians into his parish . . .

I have heard of Russian archimandrites, in very rare cases, being given the award of blessing with the trikiri and dikiri. I have never heard of an archimandrite being given a panagia/engolpion. That's a new one for me!

I also have heard of the trikery/dikery being given in rare and very honorific circumstances to some Russian archimandrites.
I have never heard of someone who was not exarch or eparch being given the engolpion. Fr. Serge is only the vistator, and has not been elevated to Exarch.

I think it is a wonderful gesture. I wonder if it isn't also the intent to get the Vatican's notice? The Belarusian church needs financial support and direction too. Hopefully the K'yivan Patriachate will be established one day and Belarus will be included in it's home territory. Does anyone know if native Belarusian Catholic seminarians are being trained in Ukraine? In Christ, Michael

Michael, I'll only go with you on that hope if the dual Byzantine Patriarchates (Byzantine-Greek and Byzantine-Slav) concept comes about Does anyone know if native Belarusian Catholic seminarians are being trained in Ukraine? In 1999, there were reportedly 8 seminarians "studying in the seminaries of different countries" The Belarusian Greek-Catholic Church [ praiseofglory.com] Many years, Neil, who believes that it is important to preserve the "orphan" Churches (and is embarressed to note that he misspelled the Major-Archbishop's name )

from the Holy See Bulletin: Appointment of apostolic nuncio in Belarus The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Msgr. Ignazio Ceffalia, nunciature counsellor, as apostolic nuncio in Belarus, at the same time elevating him to the titular see of Fiorentino, with the dignity of Archbishop.
Curriculum vitae
Msgr. Ignazio Ceffalia was born in Palermo on 28 April 1975. He was ordained a priest on 6 August 2003, and incardinated in the eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi.
He graduated in canon law.
He entered the Holy See diplomatic service on 1 July 2006, and has served in the apostolic nunciature in Ecuador, Thailand, the Permanent Mission to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, the Section for Relations with States and International Organizations of the Secretariat of State, and finally in Venezuela.
He knows Albanian, French, English and Spanish. Seems to me that it is taken for granted that he knows Italian
