Good day to all. On June 11th, Cardinal Lubomyr Husar ordained two new Ukrainian Catholic bishops in Edmonton, Alberta: Bishop David Motiuk, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archeparchy of Winnipeg (and the youngest bishop in the Church) and Bishop Paul Chomnycky, O.S.B.M., new Apostolic Exarch for Ukrainian Catholics in Great Britain. The Western Catholic Reporter has coverage of the ordination, including photos, and biographical information for both bishops. The stories and photos can be accessed at http://www.wcr.ab.ca/index.shtml
and by scrolling down the page to the hyperlinks to the various stories.

May God grant them many years of fruitful ministry!

Peace to all,
Charles

Wow papa Lybomyr actually elevated them to the bishopric! Maybe are church is starting to act like a real sui juiris church?

What's next? Maybe they will select a bishop for Chicago at the Holy Synod in July?! wink

Interesting site:

2 questions:

1. Is that really a Ukrainian Catholic Church that they were ordained in? eek

2. The articles often refer to the priests being ordained as Bishops. But I have been learned that in our tradition, the ordination is the ordination of priesthood and the that the priest is simply "elevated" as an eparch. Perhaps this is just due to the Latin paper in which it was published? Please explain.

That really is a Ukrainian Catholic Church - St. Basil`s in Edmonton.

Both of the priests were ordained bishops. This is not an instance of an honor being conferred, but of the priests receiving the fullness of the priesthood. Over the decades of my studies on the hierarchy I have been fortunate to receive the booklets printed for the ordinations of hundreds of bishops around the world. Among others I have the booklets from the episcopal ordinations of Bishop Cornelius John Pasichny, OSBM, as Eparch of Saskatoon, and Bishop Walter Paska as Auxiliary of the Archeparchy of Philadelphia. In both booklets, I find the following:

"... The Archpriest and Proto-deacon lead the Bishop-elect through the Royal Doors to the edge of the eagle rug. The Bishop-elect bows three times. The Proto-deacon announces in a loud voice:
The beloved of God, elected, confirmed, and most honorable Priest "N" is led forth to be ordained Bishop of the God-saved city of "N" "

Further on the metropolitan states "I have authority to ordain you bishop."

I hope that this is helpful.

Peace,

Charles
