To My Good Friends of the Byzantine Forum:

Glory to Jesus Christ, Honor to Mary Immaculate!

I am wondering if there is much of a difference between the Old Rite Orthodox Prayer Book and the Jordanville Prayer Book. I have the Jordanville Prayer Book and I am quite satisfied with it and I am thinking about getting the Old Rite Orthodox Prayer Book yet I tend to think that they are quite similar.

Any information is appreciated.

Thank you so much!

John,

The Old Slavonic Prayer book is quite different-

you can find one here- Old Orthodox Prayer Book [easternchristiansupply.biz]

From the Preface:
“The sources from which our Slavonic text was drawn, and from which the English translation was made, are liturgical and devotional books carefully cherished and used for centuries by the Russian Orthodox Old Ritualists, commonly called Old Believers. These books are part of the whole Orthodox tradition; they are none other than the very books printed and used by the whole Orthodox Church in Russia before the reforms of Patriarch Nicon in the seventeenth century. Furthermore, the Russian Orthodox Church now accepts these books as being vehicles of salvation equal to the more modern editions. Thus the Orthodox reader will find in this prayer book material with which he is, in general, familiar, but with some small variations.”

The Jordanville Prayerbook follows the Russian Orthodox usage after Nicon.

I have them both, and like them both very much, but I like the Old Orthodox Prayerbook better, to be frank.

The form of the Angelic Salutation in the Old Orthodox Prayer Book is nearly the same as our usage in the Greek Catholic Churches.

Blessings,

Lance
