If a layman is serving as an altar server should he remove his stikharion before leaving the altar to read the Epistle from in the Nave?

In several of the churches I recently attended the chanting of the Epistle is extremely stylized. It has been impossible to understand. I more interested in the words than the chanting

Correctly, if a layman is to read the Epistle, he first takes a sticharion (of the proper size, please) to the priest, asks and receives a blessing, puts on the sticharion, and only then goes to the nave to do the reading.
After the Gospel, he may again seek a blessing and remove the sticharion.

If you already have it on serving at the altar, you simply take the blessing to read to the Epistle from the priest, (which you can do during the singing of the Troparia/Kontakia or similar opportune time) simply saying "Master bless the reader of the Apostol" and extend your hands, cruciform (right over left) to take the blessing.

I more interested in the words than the chanting When I chant the Epistle, I make sure I am well understood and and really declaring it clearly. I think my style is very well accepted by many in our liturgy. I do know what you mean though, some are very hard to understand...
