For Byzantine Catholics in northwestern Michigan, Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Woods Roman Catholic Church in Kalkaska, Mi. at 4:30 p.m. on Palm Sunday, April 5. This will be the second Divine Liturgy celebrated in Kalkaska and will be done on a monthly basis.

Byzantina,

Thanks for that info. Do you happen to know whether the schedule is for a specific week of each month? And from which parish the mission is being served?

Many years,

Neil

Neil, as far as I know there has been no specific Sunday chosen to do the Byzantine Liturgy. I have signed up for e-mail notifications as to when they will be so I should be able to posted updated info if anyone is interested. Below is copied from the Latin Diocese of Gaylord (about a month or so ago) and gives a little more background information.

Byzantine Divine Liturgy to be Celebrated in Kalkaska
The Byzantine Catholic Divine Liturgies of St. Basil the Great and St. John Chrysostom will be celebrated on a monthly basis at St. Mary of the Woods in Kalkaska beginning the First Sunday of Lent, March 1st at 4:30 p.m. Bishop Patrick Cooney of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gaylord and Bishop John Kudrick of the Byzantine Eparchy of Parma granted their approval in January with the hope of more fully ministering to Eastern Rite Catholics living in northern lower Michigan. These liturgies are the equivalent of the Roman Catholic Holy Mass. Fr. James Barrand, who was ordained at the Byzantine Ruthenian Cathedral of St. Mary in California in 1989, will be the presider for the Divine Liturgies. Fr. Barrand is a bi-ritual priest who has been granted faculties to celebrate Mass in both the Latin and Byzantine rites. He is currently assigned as Pastor to St. Mary of the Woods, Kalkaska

Hope this helps.

Helen-Margaret,

Thanks very much. If you can post updates, maybe a pattern will emerge. Northern MI is a bit of a drive from MA biggrin , my interest is in creating an entry in our on-line directory. Assuming this continues, after a while I'll likely e-mail the priest involved and see if I can nail him down.

Many years,

Neil

John,

Do you happen to know if that was due to lack of participation/interest?

Neil,

It was because the bi-ritual priest was moved.

This is one of my many arguments about our Churches relying on bi-ritual priests.

This is one of the sad aspects of Eastern Catholic. That driving through all the small towns in Northern Michigan, there are plenty of RC churches, and we have none. If I wish to attend Divine Liturgy then I can choose to go with our Separated Brethren, but then I must refrain from communion. I also can go to the local western rite church, and well... while I can receive our Lord in the Eucharist, there is a trade off...

John and Neil,

just to clarify, Fr James Barrand is not a bi-ritual priest as is commonly understood. Fr James, as noted above, was ordained for the Eparchy of Van Nuys and has been incardinated as a cleric for the Eparchy since ordination. He later received Latin faculties.

Fr James has now returned home to the Eparchy of Van Nuys and is currently serving in the Pastoral Center, Phoenix, AZ. He is a regular celebrant/concelebrant at the ProCathedral of Saint Stephen, Phoenix,AZ. Northern Michigan's loss is our gain.

Deacon John,

Please accept my apologies, The email I got from St. Mary made it sound like he was a latin bi-ritual.

I heard him preach many years ago when he was serving temporarily at St Stephen in Phoenix. He is a gifted homilist.
