Latest information (earlier today) is that the Synod elected three candidates for the position of Eparch of Newton and sent the terna to Rome for the final decision, since the USA is not in the "patriarchal territory". The proposal to create a second eparchy has been postponed, but there is the likelihood of having one or two auxiliaries in the near future. Incognitus

Isn't there already an auxiliary, so don't you mean an additional auxiliary or auxiliaries?

I can just see someone doing a search on the internet for Melkite Synod, and pulling up this conversation. Then they will have to come read the forum just to see if we really are this ambidextrous, fingers or no fingers.

Incognitus, Are you enough "in the know" :p to say whether there are any surprises among the 3. (I have my own speculative threesome, not that anyone asked my not so humble opinion ). Dear Incognitus, "Not the patriarchal territory." Perhaps we Ukies are pushing for the wrong thing. Rather than a patriarchate, perhaps we should be working on a "Catholicosate" who would have universal jurisdiction? When I read things like this, it renews the feelings I have fostered toward Rome for a long time now . . . It makes me want to go out and try and get more Orthodox to join us in communion with Rome . . . NOT! Alex

Incognitus, I heard 3 names today; 2 would have been on my own speculative list, both highly respected, but very different from one another to my thinking. I suspect either would serve the office well. The third was a complete surprise to me - he's someone I know of, know by sight, but don't really know or know a lot about (forgive the dangling preposition  ). I'm told he's a dark-horse, but that some think he would do very well. I had anticipated a different 3rd candidate - someone who might not immediately come to mind, but who also has some definite qualifications and factors in his favor. Of course, I don't know with certainty that the 3 names I heard are accurate . Many years, Neil

I've heard no names at all, so I cannot offer any informed comment on that topic. But since Rome often leaks like a sieve, it wouldn't surprise me if the names were to emerge in the course of discussion. Anyway, we shall see. Incognitus
