Any word yet on the doings of the recent Melkite Synod? I'm wondering who the new bishop of North America will be.

Given that the Synod's recommendation requires Rome's approval frown , we will likely not know immediately.

Many years,

Dear Neil:

It's not as dour, nor as dire, as you forsee! wink

Once in a while, humor me with a smile or a biggrin when fingering Rome.

You ARE still Irish, I am sure! cool

Dear Amado,

Since this isn't a Catholic site, we can just give an unadulterated finger toward Rome . . . wink

I understand that medieval English soldiers/bowmen escaped having their middle fingers cut off by their French enemies and so came out pointing this particular finger at them while saying: Pluck yew! in reference to "plucking the yew" or pulling on the bowstring of the bows made from the English Yew.

So I don't see why Rome should be too, too upset when some Eastern Catholics follow suit . . .

And the Irish national symbol, the Harp of Tara, was given to the English by a Roman Pope.

So the Irish have no particular reason to be all that papal, do you think?

Dear Alex:

I thought only the Ukies kept on giving Rome the finger nowadays.

I was totally "shocked" to discover that the Melkites are not far behind! biggrin

Well, we (Latins) have to go through and put up with the entire list (of 22) I guess. wink

(Oh my, so that's where the ever popular "Chicago middle finger" gesture came from! biggrin )

Actually it was the first two fingers of the right hand, which are the two fingers used for archery... and hence the European hand gesture of showing the back of the hand with those two fingers extended.

The use of the middle finger is an American usage, I believe.

And I believe "it" was invented here in Chicago . . . or in New York . . . or in LaLa land!

Dear Edward,

You are Old Rite to the end . . . smile

I was once explaining the Old Rite Sign of the Cross to a class when one genius jumped up and said, "Could we use that to express ourselves to our teachers when they give us too much homework?" wink

Dear Amado,

Actually, everything we Ukies know about standing up for our "rites" to Rome, we learned from the Melkites! smile

God bless His Beatitude the Melkite Patriarch, His Holy Synod and Neil the Irish Melkite!

Dear Amado,

Yes, we took their example and "melked" it for all it was worth! smile

Dear Alex:

You must have "melked" them bone-dry considering the Ukies' persistent fingering at Rome for complicity in almost everything that plagues the UGCC today. biggrin

Dear Amado,

Yes, the Ukies should be grateful when Rome seemingly accepts the blame for things we (or our bishops) have done to our church . . . smile
