On radio, Pres. Bush has just expressed his condolences to Terri's family, joining Gov. Jeb Bush.

The President reiterated his support for those fighting for a culture of life. He said he and millions of Americans are saddened by Terri's death.

Pres. Bush added that "the essence of civilization is that the strong have a duty to protect the weak . . . In cases where there are serious doubts and questions, the presumption should be in favor of life."

It was also reported that at the Vatican, an unnamed Cardinal was to have said that the death of Terri by starvation and dehydration is an "attack" against God!

On the FoxNews website (www.foxnews.com [foxnews.com]):

Parents were denied access to daughter's bedside in final hours mad

I was there when my mother of blessed memory reposed in the Lord two years ago.

I do not understand this cruely and heartlessness in a time when the worst of the worst would offer some gesture of tenderness. The calloused Roman soldiers at least offered our Saviour a drink from a sponge on a spear and allowed our Lady and others to be there at the cross.

No more posts today; my heart is too sad.

The statement of the USCCB, through Cardinal William H. Keeler, chairman of the U.S. Bishops' Committee for Pro-Life Activities:

We mourn the tragic death of Terri Schindler Schiavo, who died today from dehydration and starvation.

Terri Schiavo's plight brought to light a critical question: To be a society that is truly human, how should we care for those most helpless patients who cannot speak for themselves?

A year ago Pope John Paul II answered this question, when he reaffirmed that "the administration of food and water, even when provided by artificial means," should be considered "morally obligatory" as long as it provides nourishment and alleviates suffering for such patients.

"Any man's death diminishes me," said the poet John Donne, "because I am involved in mankind." We are all diminished by this woman's death, a death that speaks to the moral confusion we face today. Ours is a culture in which human life is increasingly devalued and violated, especially where that life is most weak and fragile.

We pray this human tragedy will lead our nation to a greater commitment to protect helpless patients and all the weakest among us. "Yes, every man is his 'brother's keeper,'" as the Holy Father teaches "because God entrusts us to one another" (The Gospel of Life, 19).

May the soul of Theresa Marie Schindler Schiavo rest in the peace and mercy of God. And may God have mercy on our society which failed to protect this innocent human life.

According to the NY Times, the family's attorney said her brother and sister were with her until shortly before she died. Why would her parents be kept away but not her siblings? Are we sure of the Fox report? That just sounds unnecessarily cruel to her parents.

On the home page (www.foxnews.com [foxnews.com]) it reports:

Quote
Parents were denied access to daughter's bedside in final hours
This is what has been reported and has not been retracted. We will see how this all unfolds (verification, details, etc.)

Also... the parents would like a full Catholic funeral/burial; her husband wants her body cremated ... that also sounds "unnecessarily cruel" to me - as has all aspects [except for her being allowed the Eucharist] of this story.

My local paper reported the same thing (see below)

Terri Schiavo Dies at 41
Thursday, March 31, 2005

The tug-of-war over Schiavo, a lively but shy woman before she fell into a persistent vegetative state in 1990, continued until the very end. A representative for the Schindlers accused their son-in-law, Michael Schiavo (search), of barring their family from the hospice room where their daughter died.

"Unfortunately, just 10 or so minutes before she died we were told we had to leave the room because there would be an assessment of her condition and because her husband Michael wanted to be in the room," said Father Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life (search).

Pavone said Michael Schiavo would not allow Bobby Schindler and Suzanne Vitadamo, Terri Schiavo's siblings, to remain in the room, saying he wanted some time alone with her. A few minutes later, Terri Schiavo died.

"His heartless cruelty continued until the end," he said. Representatives for Michael Schiavo had yet to comment on the accusations, and his whereabouts were unknown.

A police motorcycle escort led a white van carrying Terri Schiavo's body away from the hospice. The destination of the van was unclear.
...
Also, our local paper in Jacksonville reports:

Quote
The feud between the parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, and their son-in-law continued even after her death: Brother Paul O'Donnell, an adviser to the Schindlers, said they and their two other children "were denied access at the moment of her death. They've been requesting, as you know, for the last hour to try to be in there and they were denied access by Michael Schiavo. They are in there now, praying at her bedside."

Minutes before the announcement of her death, Schiavo's parents, Mary and Bob Schindler, and her brother hurriedly entered the hospice in Pinellas Park, Florida.

Brother Paul O'Donnell, a spokesman and spiritual adviser for the Schindlers, said police denied their request to be with Schiavo, 41, when she died, but that her parents had access to their daughter's body after her death and prayed.

Michael Schiavo, Terri's husband and guardian, controlled who could visit her and when.

The headline/information at FoxNews was revised and states:

Quote
Parents were denied access to 41-year-old daughter's bedside in final moments
Such is the nature of reporting (gathering facts, revising, etc ...). It was known and announced that she was dying and her parents had to wait to see their daughter when it was known that time was short? Police are still needed - even moments before death to keep them out? Most hearts would melt and put aside differences at that point. IMHO - very cruel.

From the Vatican:

ROME - A Vatican cardinal denounced the death Thursday of Terri Schiavo, saying removing the feeding tube that was keeping her alive was "an attack against God."

Portuguese Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins, head of the Vatican's office for sainthood, told reporters that "an attack against life is an attack against God, who is the author of life."

The cardinal, speaking shortly after the brain-damaged woman died in Florida, said the ailing Pope John Paul II "teaches us not only with his suffering, but also with his teaching the great respect for life. Life is the most precious thing we have."

John Paul, 84, has been put on a feeding tube of his own as Parkinson's disease and other ailments have left him increasingly frail.

The cardinal's comments reflected other recent remarks by Vatican prelates since Schiavo's feeding tube was disconnected with a judge's approval March 18. She suffered severe brain damage after a heart attack 15 years ago.

"The prolonged interruption in her feeding ... is shaping up as an unjust death sentence to an innocent, in one of the most inhumane and cruel forms that of death from hunger and thirst," Renato Martino, who heads the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, told Vatican Radio earlier in the day, before her death was announced.

"The dutiful and unavoidable respect for a human being should impose that ... what would practically and without euphemism be murder to which it is impossible to stand by inert without becoming an accomplice be avoided," he said.

Schiavo's husband said Schiavo told him she would not want to be kept alive in a vegetative state, and he insisted he was carrying out her wishes by having the tube pulled. The woman's parents said she needed treatment and another opportunity for life.

Martino had previously appealed for Schiavo to remain on life support.

A United Methodist chaplain friend of mine writes that he does not want to be cared for by a Protestant but by a Catholic if he ever is in a life threatening situation.

Terri's martyrdom may well bring some conversions.

Could be! There's a controversial talk show host named Michael Savage, a conservative Jew who's been very outspoken in his condemnation of the killing of Terri Schiavo. Several times in the past week or so he's had high praise for the Pope and the Catholic Church's defense of life.

Last night he read an article from a German newspaper dated in the early 1930's, about how a group called the "International Catholic Truth Society" was virtually alone in speaking out against the treatment of the Jews by the Nazis, and said that they were doing the same thing now that they did then - standing up for life.

Anhelyna, this is what MSNBC is saying

Pope [msnbc.msn.com]

What is scary is that in the elderly, one condition often leads to another until the person is overwhelmed and dies.

That's too true Charles - it's easliy treated - but at the same time has he the stamina to fight this one off - we all know the Holy Father does not give in - but at this stage ......

Prayers - more prayers and still more

Anhelyna [ going out to Rome on 13 April for an Ordination }
