Good morning everyone. I am newly Orthodox, being a member of a new Antiochian Orthodox, Western Rite Parish. I have been blessed to discover that near where my daughter's live is also an Orthodox Church, which I plan to attend when I am visiting with them. I'm grateful for this. This is a Russian Orthodox Church. I've written to the Priest and he was very welcoming ... I'm looking forward to visiting them when I am visiting my girls. Would someone briefly tell me what I might expect? I know the Eastern service is somewhat different from the western one, but is the service usually in Russian or English? Any other information you can provide would be appreciated. Many thanks, abby <*)))><

Christ is in our midst!!
Why not address the language question to the priest?
The outline of the Divine Liturgy will be similar at its core: a portion devoted to the reading of the Scriptures and the second portion devoted to the offering of the gifts to God and His gift back of His Divine Son in Holy Communion. Let the Divine Liturgy touch at the core of your being as God wishes to do no matter through which "door" we enter His Presence.

Dear Abby, Our own Father David Straut is a ROCOR priest! If you look at his profile it will link you to his parish... He can correct me if I am wrong, but there probably won't be any pews of any sort, and you may want to wear a scarf in some manner on your head as this is generally the norm in Russian churches. The service could be in Russian or in English. I would ask the Priest as BOB suggested. Perhaps Father David might even know the parish. You can pm him for more general information. Russian churches are quite nice...the choirs and music is very pleasant and the spirit is always quite devout. When I have visited, I just sort of look around and try to do what everyone else is doing, and this comes from someone who is Greek Orthodox! You will want to cross yourself when others do. If it is in English, in Eastern churches, that will generally be at the mention of Glory to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit...if it in in Russian, just look around and copy others. Regards, Alice

Hello, Abby, The service will be in English. All Saints of North America [ allsaintsofamerica.org] was started as a convert mission, and Father John is himself a native of the Shenandoah Valley. The service will be the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom [ saintjonah.org] and should be essentially the same as this linked copy. (The web site of St. Jonah Orthodox Church [ saintjonah.org] has a lot of other useful information about services and such.) After the Liturgy, the parish always has a meal for everyone, if one has the time to stay. Father John Moses is the pastor. His wife is Matushka Alexandra ("matushka" being the Russian term for a priest's wife). The parish now has a second priest, the recently ordained Father Gabriel Weller. A very friendly place for new Orthodox. Have a joyful and blessed visit. Michael

WOW, Michael, do you have a crystal ball or something!! How did you know where Abbie's daughters live? I read her post three times and can't see that she mentioned a geo area anywhere?!? On the other hand, when I am rushed not only can I miss things, but my reading gets a little out of whack. Have a laugh on me: You wrote: "Father John Moses is the pastor. His wife is Matushka Alexandra ("matushka" being the Russian term for a priest's wife). The parish now has a second priest," In rushing to read your post in order to run downstairs to feed my very impatient barking dog, and answer the telephone at the same time, I read: "Father John Moses is the pastor. His wife is Matushka Alexandra ("matushka" being the Russian term for a priest's wife). The *priest* now has a second *wife*," !!! LOL!! Have a nice day, Alice

Hi, Alice,
There are no crystal balls in Kansas!
I actually was just heading back to the computer to edit my message when I saw your post, to change my wording to something like: "If you are still talking about All Saints..." because that is the parish that Abby and I had discussed previously.
Sorry about the confusion caused by my assumptions.
And a good day to you, too!
Michael
