Are you sure these monks are Benedictines and not Orthodox Christians? They sure do not look or serve like anything that is Greek Catholic here in the states. shocked

Or over here either. Just goes to show what Greek Catholic monasteries in other places will have to aim for. Interesting use of the ripida.

I have been to Chevetogne myself and the monks there are definitely Benedictines in full communion with the Catholic Church. Chevetogne is a wonderful place and the monks are very hospitable as well as justly famous for their liturgy and their music (some of which is available on CD). During the liturgy they pray for the Pope of Rome, the Bishop of Namur, and the King and Queen of the Belgians smile

I think in most eparchies here in the states, Greek Catholic priests would be removed from their parishes and repremanded if they did so... wink that was definitely "too Orthodox" smile

Job,

I am at Chevetogne at least once or twice a year for business and retreat, and it is what services are like there.

I've posted the video on Rorate Caeli

http://rorate-caeli.blogspot.com

There is nothing I can do about the anti-Orthodox and (sometimes) anti-Greek Catholic sentiments expressed in the comboxes there by some SSPX'ers since I am not in charge of moderating the comboxes, but I am trying my best to make the blog a bit more Eastern-friendly without compromising on Catholic principles. At one point I was contemplating posting there on the magnificent coverage of Byzantine Holy Week in the photo and video archives of Patriarchia.Ru -- the best I've seen anywhere -- but I decided against it in order to not stir up hornets' nests.

By the way, of the 27 monks of Chevetogne, how many serve in the Eastern-rite church and how many in the Novus Ordo Latin church?

It is about a 50/50 split give or take a monk between the two.

Look again. The monastery Archdeacon Thaddeus, who appears prominently in the accompanying video of the Polyeleos, comes from Chicago!

Father Serge,

I just received a message from the producer of the video at Chevetogne for you, who read your post, and asked me to pass on the following:

Can you nicely answer Fr. Serge Keleher (he just posted a comment on Byz. Forum)that the other deacon on the new youtube video of Holy Friday is brother Andrew from Montreal.

Wow! What a beautiful Great Friday procession. If only more of the Greek Catholic churches here in Pittsburgh were like that...

Even though I'm Roman, I've made it a point to go to Byzantine churches every Great Friday night. This past year, at Holy Spirit in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, there was a guy I knew from the Pittsburgh Latin Mass Community (Roman diocese) serving the liturgy vested in his subdiaconal tunicle from when he was with the Institute of Christ the King. It was pretty neat to see a Roman subdeacon -- in western vestments -- serving at the altar with a Byzantine priest in Byzantine vestments.

Dear Father Antony,

Thank you! I was wondering who the second deacon was; it is nice to know that he comes from Montreal. It's also nice to know that someone at Chevetogne reads the Forum.

fraternally in Christ,

Father Serge,

The brotherhood at Chevetogne sent me the link for the video as soon as it was uploaded with the express permission that it could be posted here on the forum. Yes, it is good that they are following the comments of this thread.
