When I first encountered them, I was baffled--after sharing a single bottle of wiine with my wife, I shouldn't feel miserable the next day.

Eventually I noticed that it was a sinus headache.

I mentioned it to my physician at the time, and got the reply, "Oh, we've seen that before. Just don't drink those brands." Great, I found Groucho's doctor . . .

It tends to be less expensive wines that do it. Also when I haven't gotten the sediment out of my own sometimes . . .

The only reds that have ever done it are Chilean--and they're consistent; a single glass of Chilean red will have me hating the morning.

hawk, who also can't drink inexpensive distilled spirits

It's not entirely true that there can be no preservatives in altar wine. The law allows for a certain amount of pure grape brandy to be added to increase the alcohol content of altar wines and make them less likely/slower to go to vinegar.

As a non-drinker, I find there is a consistency among wines. They all taste like cough syrup. sick Granted, some are either more or less expensive versions of cough syrup, but they all taste bad. I have never been able to develop a liking for the taste of any alcoholic beverages, so I avoid them. I will stick to dark chocolate as my drug of choice. grin

I'm right there with you. I've never tasted any alcoholic beverage that I actually like. Some I can tolerate, but I wouldn't go out of my way to try them. I'll save my calories for something truly yummy, like ice cream.

I don't know, if the Communion wine tastes like cough syrup, maybe the priest is using Jaegermeister instead of wine! That would be a switch!

YES, yes, yes, dear Babochka...my sentiments *exactly*...I could have written this myself!!!

Indeed, I, too, prefer to 'waste' such calories on something yummy to eat.

Alice

Fr. Serge

Let me tell you that if you're prone to migraines even a small glass of Red Wine can set the headache off.

But that's not really an additive--brandy is a distilled wine!

And for the unfermented exception, as I understood the explanation, it would have to be fermentable. Even the toughest wine/champagne yeasts die off at around 20% alcohol.

hawk, who doesn't seem to have any glenlivet among his whiskeys at the moment
