So are you saying that you don't remember the wire recordings? Or maybe it was just not your job to turn the crank?

We'll accept that! Now, do you know what a "78" or a "16" is? It had something to do with circular disks made of vinyl....

I still have cassette tapes that I need to put on MP3. I rarely have time to listen to anything these days, which is why I haven't bothered with it. Of course, I still have LPs from the 1960s as well. I generally tell young whippersnappers who mention old age, that if I am that old, they shouldn't feel it when I smack them. wink

Yes Charles,

But if you are old and they are young, then they have the advantage of youthful quick reflexes in ducking your attempted blow (probably while still wearing their iPod). You might want to consider a different tactic. biggrin

Actually, my reflexes haven't slowed a bit. Being an organist will do that for you. It requires living like an athlete to keep up your skills on that instrument. For what it's worth, I love young people. I often say about teaching, that I love the kids. It's the adults I sometimes can't stand. wink One of the happiest moments in my life was when two fourth-grade boys gave me a matchbox race car and a hand made card for my birthday this year, addressed to "The world's greatest teacher." grin

LOL - I have and treasure one of those, as well as a number of the cylinders. As a child, the high point of any visit to my Grandpa Tim was being allowed to select and play one of those on this - while Grandpa sat back and quietly sang in harmony with the great Irish tenor, John McCormick, or listened to the incomparable Enrico Caruso.

On every occasion, he would carefully unfold the bill of sale and show it to us. Only much later did I understand how proud Grandpa was that, as a young immigrant brickmaker, he had scrimped and saved the money to buy this technological wonder. In retrospect, it was one of only a very few material possessions that were really important to him.

Many years,

Neil

PS - I still have a reel-to-reel too, although I haven't plugged it in for a couple decades. Regretably, I don't have an 8 track; regretably, because I still have - squirreled away, somewhere - some tapes that were near and dear to me.

Wow, John is older than I thought biggrin

Does anyone remember the short-lived life of automobile phonographs? They were a mid-50's phenomenon and used the 16 2/3 inch records. My Uncle Bob had one (can't remember the car make or model) - but he also bought an Edsel later biggrin

I have a golden gate bridge for sale if he wants it.

A friend of mine in high school had an 8-track player in his car in 1999.

I'm almost positive that it was Chrysler that offered record players in cars for a year or two. An old timer I knew had one, he said the slightest bump made it skip.

Nothing like finding the song you want in 22 easy clicks and steps!

I remember my grandparents playing Glen Campbell's "Summer Nights" on their 8-Track.

I'm starting to get a hankering for Gordon Lightfoot all of the sudden....

I'm trying to imagine a record player working well even in today's vehicles with advanced suspension systems...it is no wonder it only lasted for a year or two!

HAHAHA!! I received a brand new (but stripped down) Toyota Corolla for a high school graduation gift from my family, and a boyfriend of mine at the time installed an 8 track recorder in it for me, which ofcourse my friends and I thought was 'way cool', or whatever the popular word we used at the time would have been. wink

Both of my first two vehicles, a 1972 Cougar (351 Cleveland) and a 1971 Chevy pick-up (I eventually put in a 327 - definitely one of Chevy's better motors) had 8 track players. I was playing Johnny Cash on 8 track way before he became cool again. I finally replaced the 8-track on the pickup with a cassette player about '83.
