Would be great if that comes about.

However I'm a bit concerned over one paragraph

Quote
Culture Minister Ertugrul Gunay said the government was inclined to re-open the school, even though a final decision was not yet made, the mass-selling Milliyet daily reported.

'Inclined to open '

' Final decision not yet made'

hmmmmmm ,

watching , waiting and praying

Actually seeing it, I will then believe it!

I am sorry to say knowing the Turks and the way they have broken numerous agreements and treaties, all I have to say is that I will not believe it until the first class actually begins.

In looking around I see this report [todayszaman.com] dated July 6, yesterday, saying:
Hammarberg said that during his meetings both with Patriarch Bartholomew and Turkish officials he got the impression that the solution to the Halki (Heybeliada) Greek Orthodox Seminary problem is close, although he does not have an exact picture of what kind of a solution it will be:
"The politicians decided that they will try to find a solution without opening up Pandora's box. İstanbul is going to be the capital of culture and this is a very good way to demonstrate that it is a colorful city and that minorities feel at home.” Ankara is under EU pressure to reopen the Halki Seminary."

I was reminded of the Halki reopening issue yesterday when I saw this news [churchinneed.org]:"Ground-breaking permission for Christians to pray in the ancient Church of St. Paul in Tarsus may be extended indefinitely."

Let us continue to pray for these positive changes to move forward.

I have heard that some informal assurances were given to HH Patriarch +Kyril to the effect that the school will indeed be reopened. But as others have noted, we have heard this before. Let us pray...

I can only agree. And even then, I will scan the list of students and faculty in that "first class" with an eagle eye. The need is for Halki to be an international, inter-jurisdictional, center of Orthodox scholarship. The Turks bitterly oppose anything that implies an international significance to the Ecumenical Patriarchate - back when Halki was still functioning, the Turks required a numerus clausus on foreign students.

As for Agia Sophia - it's a lovely thought and hope. But I am not holding my breath.

I have to echo OLS. Let's see the first class in, the second and third in, and the first graduation before we begin to breathe easily.
