On July 7, 2009, in the Grand Kremlin Palace, His Holiness, Patriarch KIRILL of Moscow and All Russia met with visiting US President Barack Obama.

In greeting the Most Holy Patriarch KIRILL, the President of the United States of America stated his pleasure in meeting with the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, inasmuch as religious institutions, and in particular, the Russian Orthodox Church, have great importance in the Russian society.

In turn, His Holiness, Patriarch KIRILL stated that he also highly regards the possibility of a meeting with the President of the United States. According to the words of His Holiness, not only political contacts between their two leaders are important for the development of relations between two countries, but also sincere relationships between the peoples of the nations.

His Holiness stated that “there is great potential for removing anti-American feelings in Russia and anti-Russian sentiments in America, and that is to include the feelings of the heart. The Russian Orthodox Church brought Orthodoxy to the American continent, and now there are good relations between our Orthodox American brothers. Even in the most difficult years of the Cold War we tried to maintain these good relations.”

The Patriarch continued, “It is very important that the Peoples of America and Russia preserve the system of Christian ethics. We are the most religious of nations and it is very important for us to have constant dialogue between the Christians of our countries and that our two nations must be friends.

In his response, Mr. B. Obama noted the labors of Patriarch KIRILL in strengthening Christian Unity and stated his willingness to cooperate with the Russian Orthodox Church.

In prayerful memory of the meeting, the Most Holy Patriarch KIRILL presented the US President with an icon of the Most Holy Virgin Theotokos.

Most Holy Patriarch KIRILL presented the US President Obama with an icon of the Most Holy Virgin Theotokos. Obama looks at it, and has no clue what it is. I pray that our Most Holy Lady will convert his heart.

Wouldn't it be great if Obama suddenly had a miraculous conversion to Russian Orthodoxy? I can see him right now standing there in St John the Baptist RO Cathedral in Washington getting baptized by Fr Victor:)

"Wouldn't it be great if Obama suddenly had a miraculous conversion to Russian Orthodoxy?"

That would confirm Father Alexander Schmemman's description of it as "the right Church with the wrong people".

It galls me that "President" Obama even touched an Icon, let alone receive one as a gift. This man is the biggest fraud ever thrown at the American people.

My conscience is clear. I didn't vote for him.

Nor I. He stands against practically everything I believe in.

I was scared to watch the video, but honestly, our Pres. wasn't that bad! He commented on how beautiful it (the icon) was a few times, and he seemed genuinely grateful for it.

Patriarch Kyril seems like a very warm, down to earth, and kind man...

Yes, Patriarch Kirill seems very likable. A friendly face.

I actually thought that it appeared to be false gratitude, but my impression is bias because, well, I really dislike the man's stance on just about everything. I think the worst part for me is when he mentions that he "speaks as a Christian," I just had to roll my eyes at that one.

The icon George Bush received from the Ecumenical Patriarch sits on a table in his living room. I suspect the icon Barack Obama received from Patriarch Kirill will end up in Warehouse 13, right next to the Ark of the Covenant.

I think it best we not theorize where the Icon now abides; it may well be considered Governmental property because it was an official meeting, so it could be sitting in a storage room because of the rules on gifts. I also think we should not judge what's in one man's heart. He make speak as a Christian, a disturbed and sinful Christian, but nonetheless, a Christian. He may not live up to the "standard" that we consider to deem oneself a Christian, but nobody does.

I am not defending him, I just think many of our conversations have become ill-willed and judgmental. I too am very guilty of this and in my effort to be aware I have limited my postings, so as to not continue the negativity.

Peace in Christ,
Ed

Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia said at a meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama in Moscow on Tuesday that dialogue between the Christian populations of Russia and the United States is important for the development of relations between the two countries.

"The fact that the American and Russian people have preserved their common, Christian, system of values is increasingly important. We are the most religious countries, and it is crucial to maintain dialogue between our countries' Christians because our people need to be friends," Patriarch Kirill said.

"It is necessary to appeal to the hearts of the people in order to stem anti-American sentiments in Russia, and anti-Russian sentiments in America," he said.

Russian missionaries brought the Christian faith to the American continent, he added.

"We have a history of kind communication with our American Christian brothers. We tried to keep these good relations even during the most difficult years of the Cold War," the head of the Russian Orthodox Church said.
May she work many miracles in their lives. I just pray, they do not leave it sitting in a box someplace....

Religious institutions, particularly the Russian Orthodox Church, play a special role in Russian society's life, U.S. President Obama said.

The U.S. president welcomed Patriarch Kirill's contribution to the strengthening of Christian unity and expressed readiness to cooperate with the Russian Church.

Patriarch Kirill, for his part, gave Obama an icon of the Virgin Mary as a memorable present.
