U-C Yeah but every year, everyone worries if it is going away because they are looking at early schedules and you see posts that go off the handle over it before the facts are presented. Sometimes just seems comical to me.

[quote=stivvy][quote=Ung-Certez][quote=stivvy]Why is it that it seems like we have this conversation every year? ...And it always has the same outcome.... For me (and others),the Sunday morning Church Slavonic Divine Liturgy is the only liturgy during the entire annual Otpust that has any spiritual value. One can hear the Subcarpathian-Rus' Prostopinije being sung in it's original Church Slavonic settings. It is such a joy to hear the older pilgrims sing their hearts out, singing the music from their heart and memory. I just can't say the same about any of the other RDL liturgies sung in Po-Anglic'kij. So forgive us "Prostopinije vostochniks" if we seem a little defensive. If Sunday morning Church Slavonic Divine Liturgy were to be omitted, there really would be no point in attending the annual Otpust. U-C

Did you feel this way prior to the RDL? Not at all. Before 2007, I recieved great spiritual enrichment from the Fr. Levkulic English "blue book" liturgies of previous Otpusts. The Fr. Levkulic settings are much closer to the original Church Slavonic musical settings. It has only been the post-June 2007 Otpusts that have been lacking in any spiritual value due to the enforcement of the RDL. U-C

Surely that is a question that should only be asked by Ung's SF

Well, he put it out there. "Don't tell, don't ask".

That does not give you a just reason to question him in public

I did not accuse him of anything. His response stated that he got no spiritual benefit from the English liturgies at the Otpust. He further implied that this had something to do with the RDL. I am merely inquiring whether his issue is with the RDL, or with all vernacular liturgy.
If he did not want to be questioned, he should not have raised the subject, which is something everybody should consider when posting.

We pretty much concur on this. I am, in principle, a committed vernacularist (without demanding the suppression of original liturgical languages), but since the RDL, I only attend Ruthenian liturgies celebrated in Slavonic, simply because I do not consider the RDL to be a faithful rendering of the original text (besides which, its myriad howlers and atrocious musical settings drive me up the walls). The Levkulic translation is really quite masterful. My wife (a professional translator) has become more enamored with it since she began working with the Administrator on his study edition. Both of us believe that it was fundamentally sound, and could have been revised to conform with the 1942 Recension with only light editing. There are very few outright errors, and certain choices of wording, understandable in the context of the time in which it was compiled, could be rectified easily without doing harm to the whole. In short, the authors of the RDL (I won't call them translators, since they made no effort to be faithful to any one original text) tried to fix what was not broken, and in the process of making "perfect the enemy of the good", came out with something manifestly inferior to what it replaced. Those of you who use Microsoft products are probably familiar with this phenomenon.

Does anyone know if the pre-selected Church Slavonic Prostopinije music will be the same as the past 15 years, with Patty Dietz cantoring? I would hope that different Prostopinije music be sung from the very voluminous Prostopinije arsenal. U-C

U-C, I'm afraid I can't answer your question, although I was there on Sunday morning. I'm still quite the ignoramus. I did, however, make it onto the porch for the singing on both Saturday and Sunday nights; my only regret about that is that I didn't go in previous years!
