Our loaves are much smaller (about the size of dinner rolls), because the Litija is placed on the Tetrapod, which isn't all that large. And yes, we have wine, wheat, bread and oil.

On Holy Saturday the Typicon does not prescribe the blessing of wheat and oil -just loaves, wine, and perhaps some fruit. Moreover, on Holy Saturday there is no Litia.

I think perhaps the Slavic usage for Litije follows that for prosphora: whereas the Greeks use one large loaf, the Slavs use five smaller ones. Obviously, the Slavs like the symbolism of the loaves and fishes, while the Greeks like the symbolism of partaking from one loaf.

The Antiochians use large loaves like the Greek Orthodox with ground cherry pits (Mahlepi?), I think. The larger loaves enable the faithful to take some blessed bread home.

The Slav Orthodox parishes I am familiar with blessed the prophora that would be cut for the next morning's Divine Liturgy at Litja that followed Vespers.

Are you saying the Proskomide was performed immediately after the Litija? Or that the Litija bread was cut up for Antidoron after the Litija?

The Slav editions of the Typicon specifically and strictly forbid the priest to use the prosphora from Litia for the Divine Liturgy.

No, the prosphora blessed at Litya were saved for the next morning's Divine Liturgy. No portions were distributed after the Litya blessing. These parishes didn't have the custom of people having anything to eat at this point in time because if they were to receive the Holy Gifts the next morning they had already begun their Eucharistic fast after Vespers and Litya.

At the time I knew nothing of Orthodox practice in this area. This is what I was told would be happening. So do you have any idea where this practice might have come from? BOB
