Here is an article from The Times of London that was printed today regarding the situation.

What was the banner of the formation of ACROD again?

"Neither Rome nor Moscow!" biggrin

I hope Bishop Basil and the flock of Bishop Anthony get their wish.

I did not realize that there were sensitivities around the status of the OCA vis-a-vis the Moscow Patriarchate. (At least that is how it appears to be portrayed in one of the articles above.)

God bless,

There are Orthodox faithful in the United States and quite active here on the Internet who barely allow for the OCA's canonicity much less their autocephely.

It seems to me that this attitude stems from a Russian nationalism that is a synthesis between old fashioned Muscovite nationalism and contemporary Protestant expressions of Slavaphilism, resulting in slightly more than a little bit paradoxical cluster of ecclisiastical expressions.

That is a highly subjective observation so take it with pounds of salt.

Not to say that things have not changed since then...indeed they have (slowly but surely).

CIX!

As a member of the cathedral choir, I must point out that Bishop Basil speaks only for a minority of the parishoners at the cathedral parish, and indeed, of the diocese. Most are quite content to remain part of the Moscow Patriarchate, and consider Vladyka Basil's proposal to join the Paris jurisdiction to be quite out of order.

Had this matter been handled with slightly more tact and patience by both sides, this present situation of both sides having painted themselves into an uncomfortable corner, might have been avoided.

For some this is good news, and for others bad. All I can see that it is going to cause a definite strain in Inter-Orthodox Church relations. The following was just releaased:
Quote
On 24 April 2006, Bishop Basil of Sergievo, Administrator of the Diocese of Sourozh, wrote to His Holiness Alexis II, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, asking to be released from the Moscow Patriarchate, together with those clergy and laity who wished to follow him, to be received by the Patriarchate of Constantinople.

PRESS RELEASE

From the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Holy and Sacred Synod, 8 June 2006

The Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate during its meeting on June 8 2006 under the presidency of His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, examined the appeal of His Grace Basil, Bishop of Sergievo, to the Ecumenical Patriarch and, taking under consideration canons 9, 17 and 28 of the 4th Ecumenical Council unanimously decided to accept under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriachate the above named Bishop, placing him in the Patriarchal Exarchate for Orthodox Parishes of Russian Tradition in Western Europe.

Thereafter the Holy and Sacred Synod proceeded, at the request of Archbishop Gabriel of Komana, head of the above mentioned Exarchate, to elect Bishop Basil with the title of Bishop of Amphipolis, as his auxiliary Bishop, to serve the pastoral needs of Orthodox living in Great Britain who desire to place themselves under the jurisdiction of the Exarchate.

Alex,

I really do not think this latest turn of events is a joking matter. Some serious implication can follow with this in the Orthodox world. I and would assume others do not appreciate the levity you see in this and consider it to be insensitive.

This is not good. There will be serious ramifications concerning this. Pat Alexei not only has not released Bishop Basil, he expressly forbid him from joining another jurisdiction. I fear that the showdown between Moscow and the Phanar, which has been long brewing, is upon us. At stake is the future of the Church. All concerned need our prayers that the Holy Spirit guide them at this critical moment in the history of the Church.

Dear Alexsandr,

I have to agree with your assessment. Indeed we need to seriously pray for the Holy Spirit to intervene in this grave matter.

In the Russian Orthodox church, in what sense is a Bishop "subject" to a Patriarch? Ditto for the relationship between, for example, Metropolitan and Bishop in in a non-Patriarchal, autocephalous church like the OCA?

The case in question is a little different, as Bishop Basil is not the Diocesan Bishop of Sorouzh, he was appointed as the Administrator of the Diocese, on behalf of Moscow, until a diocesan bishop could be appointed.

Dear DJS,

As far as the situation here, it is a little complicated regarding the role of the bishop and the patriarch. Technically though he was the administrator of the diocese, Bishop Basil was only an auxilary bishop whose authority was granted to him by the patriarchal synod.

As far as how the role and relationship between bishop vs patriarch in the Russian Church, or modified as in the case of the OCA, I am really not versed to give a clear answer to it. A situation like this is different than it would be with a diocesan. The role and relationship is somewhat different than in the Greek Church.

I am sorry I could not answer this better for you.
