With sadness, I must report that yesterday Father Matthew the Poor fell asleep in the Lord - no further details are yet available. He is one of the greatest monks and spiritual fathers of the contemporary Oriental Orthodox Churches; as so often happens with prophetic figures, he had his share of difficulties with the hierarchy (he is a monk of the Coptic Orthodox Church).

Please pray for his repose among the blessed, and please encourage everyone to read his published material and pray that more of his material will appear in English.

May God grant the newly-reposeed Priestmonk Matta (the Poor) blessed repose and Eternal Memory!

Blessed repose and eternal memory to the servant of God, the monk Matthew. His Communion of Love is a wonderful book.

Thanks for the link, Betty. Fr. Matthew sounds like an extraordinary individual, as do all the monks at Scetis. Blessed repose and eternal memory!

Just to let you know that the monastery website has been updated to include an English translation on the life of Matthew the Poor and a video of his funeral.
