Attention all you Mac devotees (with intel macs),

In case you not have noticed the news today, Apple is releasing the newest version of its operating system, Snow Leopard (version 10.6) on Friday, about a month ahead of what was anticipated. Pre-orders started today for only $29. Seems to have some improvements and is leaner than its predecessor by 6-7GB.

I ordered mine today, and it is guaranteed for delivery Friday morning. No standing in line here.

Also no grumbling from those across the pond about the price difference. biggrin

Actually this price difference is not as bad as on some things .

I suspect I'll go to it later this year

Now would you like an honest answer to that question? biggrin

Certainly not biggrin

it was , as you well know , purely rhetorical biggrin

Now there are other things when I really will moan about the difference in price for the same product.

Received my copy of Snow Leopard today, and i have to say I am impressed.

It is cleaner and faster than Leopard, and despite some issues with updated printer drivers it is a definite thumbs up.

Though I have to note they lied about the extra hard drive space. Instead of the promised 7GB of extra hard drive space, I have 19.5GB more now, and that is the same with the iMac also. biggrin

This list is being updated several times a doy

Up to date Snow Leopard programmes [snowleopard.wikidot.com]

I have already discovered that a programme I use will need to operate under Rosetta

I am looking forward to installing Snow Leopard on my MacBook and iMac, but I've heard it has problems with HP wireless printers, which is what I have. So I think I'll wait a few weeks or months before I upgrade.

But it still won't run hypercard again, will it?

I was ready to buy a mac a few months ago. I called apple, and had to explain to the gal what hypercard even was. I'll give her credit; she went out and did her research, and got back to me.

The best she could suggest was third party programs such as Sheepsaver. But these only emulate a powermac, not a 68k mac.

So now I've found "Revolution," which will supposedly import the old stacks. Now I need to solder a fuse or fuseholder back to the motherboard of my MacPortable so I can get the stacks I really need back off.

(Hypercard did things that nothing else today really does [or at least without major programming]. My old custom program shaved hours off the time to prepare a bankruptcy, and I want to update it!)

Well it finally arrived today smile

Snow Leopard is now running very nicely on my machine .

I have installed Rosetta and so far all is well .

Even my HP Printer worked as soon as I connected it - and I had heard that HP Printers were problematical - mine just worked .

Dod have one funny hiccough though - as I restarted after the installation though it said that Mail was working - it wasn't open on my desktop frown

However a restart and all was well.

No idea how much I got back - forgot to check the hard drive before I installed Snow - however I do have 32.6GB free now and I'm certain it was nothing like that before Snow went on.

There are plenty of 68k emulators. (googling "mac 68k emulator" brought up 48000 hits... of which the above is top hit, and takes one to various emulator homepages.)

I would need to be able to print, though, preferably to postscript/pdf (I have to file bankruptcies electronically as pdf).

I found Revolution, which runs on modern Linux, Mac, and PC (and a web version with plugin!). Maybe I'll actually publish the program this time--last time I didn't realize *just* how many years ahead of the competition I was frown

But I'm now considering a cheap macbook just to run a clear modem. Better, I suppose, would be if the linux version rushed to market (OK, best would be a freebsd version, but . . .))

I upgraded my three systems with Snow Leopard, and we have had few problems. But overall it has been great. Make sure that you update to 10.6.1 it fixes some underlying issues.

10.6.2 is in the works and has been seeded to developers. Not quite sure what it fixes, but it fixes stuff.

Printers, the older the printer the more likely there isn't going to be a driver for it. HP only really concentrates on printers that are about 3 years older and newer.

All in all the one thing I do like about Apple is they are not scared to abandon legacy technology (at this juncture PPC chips) in order to move into the future. One of the reasons why Snow Leopard is lighter is they could shed a heck of a lot of PPC code in the OS since it is optimized for intel systems only.
