I will be using it to scan photos which I touch up with photo editing software and to occasionally scan books (converting to text)for editing. Nothing too demanding or in need of real major high resolution like scanning negatives or slides.

I've gone to buying printers from Brother & Samsung. They're both regularly shipping linux drivers with everything. This isn't significant just for linux, but because this pretty much means that it will be trivial for them to connect to the next version of Windows, Mac, or anythign else that comes out.

Thanks! I have Vista on this laptop, and was wondering about 7. It sounds like that is the way I should move.
