Alas, Thomas, it was not sarcasm. he meant it sincerely. He made some further comment about what a wonderful tribute it was. Etc etc etc.

I agree with Bob that Alice makes a very cogent observation. I was, however, a bit surprised by Bob's comment above. Although I know he's younger than me (altho not sure by how much), Month's Mind (30 days post death) Masses were still the norm when I was growing up - I remember shuffling altarboy schedules around so that I could be away to attend these for family members, all of whom lived out of town.

Many years,

NEIL:

Christ is in our midst!! He is and always will be!!

It may be that this practice--the month's mind--went out in my parish and those surrounding us because there were so many Mass stipends tendered by people for birthdays, anniversaries of death, etc. With only two priests in the parish, many Mass intentions were "sent away" to the missions if they accumulated beyond a two or three year backlog.

I wasn't allowed to serve at the altar until very late because I went to public school and the nuns didn't want to spend the time teaching us Latin.

They were probably having a hard enough time teaching it to the priests.
