Dearly beloved in Christ,
Glory to Jesus Christ !
Well it is almost that time of year again. This year's annual Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Perpetual Help will take place at Mt. St. Macrina, Uniontown, PA., over Labor Day weekend, Friday,Aug. 30--Monday,Sept. 2, 2002.
In past years members of Byzcath.org have gathered together there in sort of an informal meeting to say hello, reflect on the past year, or even to put a face with a member posts in the forum.
If anyone will be going to the pilgrimage, please reply to this thread and tell us. Also we need some input from people who will be there to pick out a day, place or time, for the meeting.
Please post your suggestions in this thread. I look forward to meeting everyone there as we give honor and homage to our beloved Theotokos, whom I love very much, during this pilgrimage.

We will be there, though it is our first year, so I'm not much help at deciding where or when to meet.
Time, maybe between the processions on Sat.

SLAVA ISUSU CHRISTU! SLAVA NA VIKI BOHU!
Just got my ODPUST schedule yesterday. Guess I'll be at the 9:30 on Sunday morning and at the 7:00am on Monday morning. These are the Slavonic liturgies.
I'll be at other services as time permits; I'm staying with relatives that live about 5 mins away.
Hope to see others there!

Dear Friends,
As for Indulgences, please remember that one may get a plenary Indulgence for attending the public celebration of the Akathist to the Mother of God.
This is the same Indulgence granted to the public recitation of the Rosary, granted to the Eastern Churches by Pope John Paul II. When the recitation is private, the indulgence is partial.
It is interesting that the Orthodox Professor Poselianin writing in his 1900 edition of the "Mother of God" relates numerous "Odpusts" in Orthodox parishes throughout Volyn and other parts of Ukraine.
Some habits die hard, I suppose . . .

Alex Alex, Is that (are those) indulgence(s) any different from the one offered at the end of the event? [ 08-20-2002: Message edited by: Bob King ]

Dear Bob,
It is always such an honour to get your attention!!
I think it is different, yes.
It is one more way to obtain a plenary indulgence by the use of a specifically Eastern form of prayer and it can be offered for the faithful departed.
One problem with the plenary indulgence is that attachment to sin must be absent.
One priest once told me that since that is hardly possible for most, the indulgence we "wind up with" is partial only.

Alex Alex, I must admit the concept of the indulgence is something I never understood, and at this point would only be interested in knowing more about for the sake of knowing. It is one more of the Latin 'accretions' to the best of my knowledge. Of course, it fits in nicely with Purgatory, which, I suppose, makes it necessary?

Dear Bob,
Well, and this is my final word on the subject unless we really do want another thread on it, the Orthodox have many "odpusts" in Eastern Europe and I refer you to Professor Poselianin's "Bogomater" where he lists dozens as practiced in Orthodox parishes.
I understand from my Orthodox contacts that they have their own theological understanding of "odpusts" that have nothing to do with Purgatory.
Over and out, Administrator!

God willing & the creek don't rise, I will be onsite from sometime late Friday until the end Monday afternoon.
I am scheduled to serve as cantor for the Saturday noon Liturgy. If y'all want to meet & don't know what anybody looks like, I'll be the mezzo soprano with the baby, making a buncha noise (me, not the baby, hopefully) at the Shrine Altar Saturday at noon.
See ya there - I plan to camp again this year.

Dear Mother Sharon,
Could you provide a breakdown of the goings-on at the Odpust?
I think our own local one needs some pizzazzing up!

Hey Alex!
Go the home page of the Sisters of St. Basil. Click on the NEWS button and you'll see the schedule from last year's ODPUST.
I think one of the most impressive things are the candle light processions on Saturday and Sunday night!
The all-night hymn sing with the Litmanova ladies is pretty kewl too!
Come on down, just hope on I-79 and get off on I-70 west and then get off on PA RT 51 south and follow the signs.
So, we'll look for you Alex, eh???

Dear Mark,
As I am married, I am no longer a free man . . .
I'll have to try to convince "She Who Must Be Obeyed" and will report back, Sir!
I'll do as you recommend, your wish is my command, Sir!
