I have always treasured that quote and taken a great pride in it, perhaps even a
sinful pride... mea culpa! But are we not doing something right if Protestant theologians
speak of us so highly :-)

Also from von Harnack:

"No fresh theological thought has agitated the East since the 8th century."

He saw it as a reproach. The Orthodox see it as a compliment.

Frankly the West would be the better if no fresh theological thought had developed after the Confession of Augsburg (A.D. 1530).

Think of it: to be spared Zwingli, "the mother of sects"!

And look where the fresh thoughts got them. Protestantism with LGBT clergy and women priests. Thank God the East didn't follow suit.

If only there was more knowledge about the East...
A young RC hairdresser asked me yesterday *IF* the Greek Orthodox celebrated Palm Sunday...(HUH?!?!)

Ah..yes we do.

She also asked me how long our services were because she heard they were very, very long. I said the DL is about an hour and a half...for the response of: "oh my, that is sooo long".

Alice:

Depends on what flavor of Protestantism one selects. There is a Pentecostal church in my area that has a Sunday morning service running from 3 to 3 1/2 hours and no one thinks it's too long. Had a funeral there once that was all afternoon and had friends of the family quietly getting up and leaving after about two hours; one of my colleagues stayed for the whole thing and they sang all the verses of over 15 hymns.

The Seattle Times web site has a photo gallery of the Palm Sunday service today at St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral (ROCOR)
