Here's a question which I've been trying for several years to refer to the Congregation for the Oriental Churches - and it's not particularly controversial:
There is a "wine" called "Kahor" which many people in what was the USSR consider appropriate for sacramental use. Others consider it highly inappropriate, if not downright invalid. I don't know myself what's in this hooch; our late Bishop Philemon (Kurchaba) once told me that it was "fortified" with raw alcohol. I've tasted it once or twice and found it almost unpalatable.
But be that as it will, I should like a formal ruling from the Oriental Congregation on whether this "Kahor" is valid and licit for sacramental use. Is anyone else on the Forum aware of the matter?

Christos Voskrese!Fr.Serge,I have tried "Kahor" from Moldova and it didn't appear to be fortified with spirits.I believe this is the wine used by my confessor,Archimadrite Pachomy,who buys it from a local Russian wine merchant.I'll be seeing Fr. tonight for Vespers,I'll ask him about it.I prefer Mavrodaphne myself,though once I did get a bad bottle,which I didn't discover until actually communing! Fortunatly,I consumed the chalice without incident!

I've tried to look up "Kahor" wine on the internet, but only find a French wine called "Cahors". Are they related?

Interesting. So there is a link between Kahor and Cohors wine. The key issue would be whether honey was added to the wine to sweeten it--and apparently the Russians managed to develop a vintage that did not need fortification.

The Moldovans have excellent wines, and it was they, not the Russians, who developed this vintage.

I vastly prefer Manvrodaphne for sacramental use. I wouldn't use Kahor for that purpose (or any purpose) on a bet.
