Hi dear friends,
I have a friend who is going to be ordained a permanent deacon in Malaysia in June. He will be only the first for his diocese, and the second for Malaysia; 37 years after the first one was ordained.
Nevertheless, I have decided that I should buy him a gift seeing that we've known each other even before his Catholic days. So, any gift suggestions?

Vestments are always good, but expensive. An Epistle book with a nice silver cover is also useful.

A good sturdy garment bag is usually a popular ordination gift. And not too expensive. About half the deacons in Anchorage use ones made of upholstery fabric made by one of their fellow deacons (my Dad)...

Of course, you'll offer a nice discount to a fellow Forum member?

One assumes he's a Latin-rite deacon? If so, and he does not already have the three-volume breviary, that would be a worthy gift--although you may want to join with some others in its purchase. India may offer an affordable price, still using the translation used in English outside the US.
I'm not sure whether a version exists in Malay.

If you do the breviary it might be a good idea to check which English version is used in Malaysia, the USA, or the UK one. It is a very good idea.

OK, I'm confused, (early onset Alzheimers?) Is the Subdeacon in question Catholic or Orthodox, and if Catholic, Eastern or Western Rite?

Stuart, if you see anything that you want in Sofrino, the next time I go to Russia or Ukraine, I will find it much cheaper than the prices posted. I've seen the same Apostals for under $100 American.

Alexandr,
LOL - good question. Although Collin is himself a Melkite (or in process of canonical transfer, I forget which), his friend in Malaysia is - I'm fairly certain - a Latin Catholic.

Collin and Matta:
I have a three-volume set of the UK version I purchased on the internet for $100 American. I'll part with it for that and shipping. It came to me new and I have not used it.

Hi Neil,
the Latin bishop is just waiting for my letter to execute the transfer. Everything else has been done.
The cost sounds attractive. I will ponder upon it. Thank you.
