Does anyone know if there is a celebration of the Divine Liturgy in Hungarian anywhere fairly close to Stubenville, Ohio?

Also, does anyone know of recordings of the Divine Liturgy in Hungarian. A professional recording would be ideal but a home-made recording would also be useful.

I've had a request at the website by a woman wanting to take her mother to a Hungarian DL and I'm responding that maybe a recording can be found. I've also suggested she contact the Eparchy of Hajdúdorog to see if they have anything.

Many thanks!

Dicsértessék a Jézus Krisztus!

Well, the only one I know of is St. Mary's Hungarian Greek Catholic Church in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Not exactly near Stubenville, but if you are serious about attending, you would be very welcome.

It is a very small church. The last time I was there our family doubled their attendance. It is on 631 Giles Blvd in Windsor.

Many former Hungarian churches, such as St. John's in Cleveland, have had their Hungarian neighborhoods implode and have moved to suburban locations. St. John's is now in Solon Ohio, but there are no Hungarians there. The result is that the liturgy is conducted exclusively in English.

There is a Hungarian parish in Perth Amboy NJ, and from what I see is still has decent size. They have annual Hungarian festivals which seem to attract a lot of people. I am not sure if any of their liturgy is in Hungarian.

I would be interested in obtaining a published copy of the Divine Liturgy in Hungarian if anyone has a copy available.

Did there used to be a Hungarian parish in Trenton, NJ? I seem to recall my mom talking about that as she went to Trenton State college many years ago. BTW, the prostopenije is good, but the pace is slow....

Saint Elias Byzantine Catholic Church in Munhall (southest of Pittsburgh, not far from the cathedral) was / is a Hungarian parish, and Father Eugene Yackanich and the parish cantors take occasional hymns and responses of the Divine Liturgy in Hungarian.

I have a copy of the Levkulic Paschal Matins in parallel English and Hungarian, but I'd have to hunt through my files for a Hungarian text for the Divine Liturgy.

John,

Check w/ Father Thomas Loya. He was pastor of St John's in Solon from '83-'93 and wrote in a post here, a couple of years ago, about his efforts to retain the parish heritage during his time there (Father has Hungarian, as well as Rusyn, heritage).

Ukrainian Deanery, Eparchy of Toronto [ucet.ca]

Also, check this thread. It lists all the parishes in the Metropolia which were Hungarian at inception.

You might also try The Humgarian Bookstore - Religious Books [hungarianbookstore.com] or The Hungrian Heritage Museum Bookstore [jcu.edu]

I suppose, ultimately, one could write to

Eparchy of Hajdúdorog
Hajdudorogi Puspoki Hivatal,
Pf. 60,
Bethlen Gabor u. 5,
H-4401 Nyiregyhaza, Magyarorszag

David,

I suspect that St Nicholas in Trenton was the Hungarian parish about which you inquired. It is now closed.

Many years,

Neil

The seminary in Uzhorod celebrates the Divine Liturgy in Hungarian on one or two days of the week.

In recent times (and perhaps still), the Uzhorod Cathedral had a Sunday liturgy in Hungarian, in addition to the ones in Ukrainian and Church Slavonic.

Fr. Ivan Shemet at the seminary there, may be a good person for you to check with, John.

Best,

Fr. Joe

St. Mary's Hungarian in Windsor closed over a year ago. The priest is now in the London, Ontario area.

My husband and I did attend a Hungarian Greek Catholic Divine Liturgy in Budapest a few years ago, but that is a long way to go.

Although not professional quality, I made a video recording of a mostly Hungarian Divine Liturgy at the Shrine of Mariapocs, Hungary in 2007 at the conclusion of the anniversary of Blessed Theodore Romzha. I say "mostly" because some of the litanies were led by an American deacon in English, and a few other priests' parts were done by non-Hungarian speaking bishops who concelebrated. But almost all the people's responses were led by a small schola from the seminary in Hungarian.

The first several minutes are available to watch on OLTV here:

http://www.oltv.tv/id800.html

And copies of the complete liturgy are available to purchase on CD or DVD from the OL online catalog of media here:

While I am very disappointed to learn of the closing of St. Mary's in Windsor, I understand their situation very clearly.
Some of my Canadian relatives were in the past strong endowers of this parish, but those blessed souls have passed on and the next generation did not maintain their heritage.

I have been to the Hungarian Heritage Museum in Cleveland numerous times, and while their collection and bookshop are slowly growing, they do not have any resources on the Greek Catholic Divine Liturgy in Hungarian. I would still encourage support of this dedicated group preserving the Hungarian heritage. They do have museum quality displays of various cultural themes, and are increasing their historic photo collection.

Last time that I was in Hungary (in the mid-nineties) I was happy to notice how many different recordings and prayer-books were available in Hungarian from the Eparchy of Hajdudorog offices in Nyiregyhaza. I suggest trying them again.

For a bilingual (English-Hungarian text), try writing to Father Conrad Dachuck (Eparchy of Toronto), who produced an excellent such text in accordance with the Ordo Celebrationis, and who might have a copy he could send you.

Fr. Serge
