I just read it on the wires that Rome has accepted the resignation of Bishop Nicholas Sarma, Aux Bishop of Newton (Melkite). What else do we know?

Learner,

Although it hasn't been widely known, the clergy and some laity have been aware for quite a while that Bishop Nicholas submitted his resignation to the Patriarch and Holy Synod and to Rome for personal reasons some months ago.

Public speculation as to the reasons for his decision is not really appropriate and I would ask that folks please refrain from doing so. Let me just make clear that there is nothing scandalous involved.

His plans for the future aren't really common knowledge at this point. I recommend him to your prayers as he decides what he will be doing. May God grant him many years.

Neil

Neil:

I know in the past in the Latin Church when a new Ordinary is chosen, sometimes the Aux Bishop will resign for personal reasons. It gives the new Ordinary space to make necessary changes as part of their administration. It gives the Aux Bishop some time to grow and pray. Most times, within few years they are either elected (appointed) an Ordinary somewhere else, or appointed to be an Auxillary in another Diocese.

My prayers are with Bishop Nicholas.

Bishop Nicholas has said that he will continue to work with and support the Melkite Church here in the United States through teaching, writing and preaching retreats.

On a personal note, I will greatly miss his leadership and vision. He is an outstanding example of what a bishop should be, and I feel blessed to have known and served him.

I, too, shall miss Bishop Nicholas' pastoral presence. May I have the good fortune of attending a retreat or lecture given by him!

God grant him many years!
