several parishes of former Roman Catholics, Anglicans, and Protestants have joined the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, whose hierarchs have ordained clergy for these communities.

Very interesting development. Do you have any links or further information? Does this set the stage for "Ordinariate Wars"?

I posted this elsewhere last week...

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

May we pause and give thanks to God for the wonderful events within the Western Rite over the last few days. Quite an extraordinary week.

1. The reception into the Russian Church Abroad of Archbishop Anthony Bondi with his brother bishop Michael and the clergy and 10 parishes

2. The announcement by Fr Michael (Wood) of the construction commencing in the New Year of a major Western Rite monastery complex

3. The announcement, also by Fr Michael, of a hermitage to be built in New Mexico

4. The announcement of the reception of Fr Patrick Lowery and Saint Patrick's chapel in Michigan

5. The reception of Fr Allyne Lev Smith in Des Moines.

For these things let us praise God.

Hierom. Ambrose

Dearest Father Ambrose,

I did a search on the I-net for Archbishop Anthony Bondi. Several independent websites state that he is married. Is that true?

Well, yes and no. The fact is that he was married and divorced twice as an Episcopalian priest with children from each, and the last time to the ex-wife of an OCA priest which ended in divorce sometime after his "consecration" as bishop.

To those alarmed that the new communities might practice forms of devotion which originated in the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches, Abp. Anthony wrote the following clarification: "For the record, my church [in Putnam Valley, NY --Ed.] has no organ music, we sing Gregorian Chant, we do not have exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, stations of the cross, sacred heart devotions, pews, or kneelers."

Funny thing about those "pre-Roman Catholic vestments of the West" is that they look pretty Roman Catholic to me!

I wouldn't go anywhere near a so-called "Western Rite" church without stations of the cross.

It would be a bit like a "Byzantine Rite" church without an iconostasis.

I've always been curious why Western Rite Orthodox still use the Byzantine-style censers, with bells. Not even a lot of Russians use them - and they're Byzantine! Why is it that they'll don Western vestments, have a Western liturgy, but not do without the Byzantine censers?

I'd prefer to hear this from a Western Orthodox himself, if there is still one on this Forum.

Uniatism is certainly not the sole property of the Catholic Church.

But then, Father Deacon, the demonizing of it by Orthodox is hypocritical on its face. wink

Fr. Deacon and Alexis,

I have often wondered why no one seems to bring this up when Eastern Orthodox criticize Eastern Catholics. It may be because the number of Western-rite Orthodox is very small in comparison to the Eastern Catholic Churches.

I find it to be really hypocritical that it is okay for Westerns to retain their western theology (minus what the Orthodox don't agree with) and practice and become Orthodox but for Orthodox to want to return to Communion with the Roman Church and retain their Orthodoxy is seen as a great scandal.

I hear no protest from Rome about Western-rite Orthodox. Shouldn't the Orthodox stop this form of uniatism? Or should Roman Catholics not come to Ecumenical gatherings if Western Rite Orthodox are there since some Orthodox won't come if Eastern Catholics are there?

I find that it is a one way street at times in Orthodox-Catholic dialogue. Eastern Catholics bad, Western Orthodox Good is just one example in my mind.

Just my two sense.

(P.S I don't personally have a problem with Western-rite Orthodoxy. I just dislike the hypocritical aspects of it.)

Getting off-topic, folks. I suggest that anyone wishing to pursue the issue of WR-Orthodoxy as being akin to ER-Catholicism start a thread on the topic - E&W seems like a good forum choice in which to do so.

Many years,

Neil

If you don't like Byzantine Churches w/o icon screens, you better avoid the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Erie, PA which, at least the last time I was in it (back in 1983), did not have an icon screen.
