I collect the histories of Rusyn (BCC) and Ukrainian Greek Catholic (UGCC) and Orthodox parishes. For 2011, the following parishes are scheduled to celebrate their centennials:

St. Michael's BCC Dunmore PA
St. Mary's UGCC Centralia PA
St. Mary's UGCC Marion Heights PA
St. Michael's BCC Merrillville IN
St. Mary's OCA Merrillville IN
Nativity of Virgin Mary UGCC Chicago (Pullman) IL

Am I missing any?

Nativity B.V.M. is not in the Pullman area of Chicago, it's located in the Chicago suburb of Palos Park, and we will be celebrating our centennial in 2011.

That underground coal mine fire is still burning in Centralia, and, to the best of my knowledge, there is hardly anybody left living in town.

The Pullman church is St. Michael's.

John, do you have historical material on the two Merrilville parishes?

Deacon Robert,

Although what you say is true (there's actually less than a half-dozen residents remaining), I can vouch that Assumption of the Blessed Virgin (UGCC) is still a viable parish with a weekly Divine Liturgy served at 11:00am each Sunday. Although I arrived too late to attend on our last trip through there (this past Fall), I noticed several cars departing from the church, which is actually situated on a hillside at the outskirts of town, not in the area actively impacted by the fire.

It's one of the very few structures still standing and, from the exterior, appears very well-maintained. A photo of the interior by our own Father Jon suggests that it is also in excellent condition. See here.

Many years,

Neil

Tim: I have several histories of the Merrillville parishes, both of which were formerly located in Gary.

Lawrence: Thanks for the correction. Serves me right for using a Ukrainian church directory from 1934. Can you tell me how I can get on a list of centennial histories reserved for purchase? Dyakuyu!

I have a friend who regularly attends liturgy at Annunciation and he reports that the parish is alive and well. Annunciation is one of two GC churches in PA (the other being in South Fork) which has an adjoining cemetery. Walking though it is like traveling through the "Staryj Kraj" with headstone inscriptions in Hungarian, Slavonic, Ukrainian and several Rusyn dialects.

John,

Are you speaking of Assumption in Centralia?

Many years,

John,
My great grandfather John Fiffick (my father's mother's father) is buried in South Fork (aka known as Fifficktown).

Yes. The parish has a fiercely loyal membership. If there is a centennial celebration, I plan to attend.

The Gary (now Merrillville) OCA parish was founded primarily by Lemkos who previously attended Holy Trinity church (now Cathedral) in Chicago. There is a detailed history of the parish written in standard Russian (On God's Field: 20th Anniversary of St. Mary's Russian Orthodox Church of Gary Indiana, North America, 1911-1931 (Na nive Bozhei, istoria S. Pokrovskoy paravoslavnoy russkoy tserkvi v gorode, Gery, Indiana, Severnaya Amerika (217 pp, 1931). I believe the founders moved to Gary as the steel industry began to boom there. St. Michael's Greek Catholic Church (now also in Merrillville) was also founded in 1911. They may have originated from St. Mary's on the South Side. Interesting to me that there were no Galician/Ukrainian parishes dating from this era in northwestern Indiana. Perhaps the Galicians joined Rusyn parishes and saw no need to establish separate. parishes. Another Gary parish, St. Nicholas' Carpatho-Russian Orthodox, is now in Hobart IN and dates from 1935. It separated from St. Michael's during the Celibacy "borba" of the 1920s. It marked its 75th anniversary last year but I have been unable to confirm that any history was published for the occasion. I welcome comments/corrections on the relationships between these churches.

I photographed some of those churches in Gary a few years when a friend and I did an extensive photo shoot. Scary place, but we chose a cool morning and had no problems. Even managed to get the birthplace of Michael Jackson.
