Father Ambrose:

Love your sense of humor. After I was injured on the job in 1993, the doctors took x-rays of every part of me. The only thing I can say is that I know God has a tremendous sense of humor because I seem to be constructed of all the mismatched parts left over in His creation bin. Nothing matches; no mirror images. laugh

The Celts are not actually a race anyway, although we do have certain aspects of common history and two divisions (the P-Celts and the Q-Celts) of our linguistic commonality.

Genetically, 80% of all Western Europeans are descended from the first wave of hunter-gatherers who came north following the last ice age. The remaining 20% are descended from a second wave of migration from Mesopotamia and the Near East, which brought agriculture into Europe. All the subsequent waves of migration--Celtic, Germanic, Slavic--may have changed the populations culturally, but had little genetic impact. In the British Isles and Ireland in particular, you are who you were.

Take, for example, Cheddar Man, a 5000-year old skeleton found in a cave near Cheddar in England. Scientists were able to extract DNA from the dentine in his teeth, and a direct lineal descendant of the man in the cave was found living in a town only a few miles away.

I wonder if there's any substantial connection between the Celts and the Baltic peoples, who are not - as far as I know - classified as Slavs.

Is that the origin of having to watch one's P's and Q's?

What if that's true on one foot and not the other? What does that mean?

Bob

Send photographs.

Father, bless!

Hmm, I've always known I was a bit more than half Irish.

Now I know that it's my right side:

But my third left toe is longer than the left large toe.

Does this indicate 5/8, or 3/4???

Any other bodily parts asymetrical?

No, but I have "football player's toe" on both feet, in spite of never having worn a football cleat . . .

Alas, no, that is not the origin of the injunction to mind one's P's and Q's!

Hobbits turn up in many unexpected places.

Dear Secret Celtophile,

Dia s Mhuire duit - agus Padraig!

I am happy to report that yesterday (17 March on the Julian Calendar) our parish in Dublin offered the Divine Liturgy in Irish, in honor and veneration of Saint Patrick.

"Tir gan teanga - tir gan anam"

Come and see us now and then.

None (genetically speaking), Balts and Celts arrived in opposite sides of Europe from different directions and from different origins several thousand years apart

Balts (Lithuanians and Latvians) are not Slavs but Balts, though genetically and linguistically there is a (very) distant common origin, how much common is debated

...To Anna, Ancient Celts were only present northern most regions of modern Italy, regardless maternally it is a possibility though unlike male y-haplogroups, female mtdna haplogroups are much less diverse across Europe so ethnicity is harder to detect, and keep in mind it would be very deluded, if I moved to Africa and married an Africa woman and all my descendants would marry Africans my great-grandson x20 would still test as coming from Eastern Europe by virtue of me and my ancestors. Likewise if my African wife would come to Europe to the part where I come and all my female descendants marry Europeans my great-granddaughter x20 would test as coming from Africa

Dear secret Celtophile,

If you will be able, come and join us for the midnight service on Pascha (Saturday to Sunday). We're probably serving in the larger church at Clonliffe.

Plan to be in Ireland this July for the class 25th celebration.
If I am in Dublin I will certainly try to make it.
What are the times of DL?
Stephanos I
And where is the Sunday Liturgy normally held?

Divine Liturgy at 10 AM in the small church at Clonliffe - which is tricky to find, so call me. You will be very welcome.

I have been to Clonliffe before.
I am looking into booking my ticket soon. The reunion has been set for the 13th and 14th and then I am heading up to Dublin and on over to the UK, will let you know as soon as I find out more information.
