Diak,

I know that most Ukrainian Greek Catholic Churches still venerate the Holy Cross on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and on the Third Sunday of the Great Fast (Veneration of the Holy Cross). I guess the Ruthenian Metropolian Churches have issued new rubrics where the faithful are no longer instructed to come forth and venerate the Holy Cross. I've been to many Ruthenian parishes where not only do the faithful not come forth to venerate, but even the priests do not come forth and venerate, at that is real shame. eek

That's a pretty bold statement. Do you know that for sure?

What is happening in the Ruthenian Church here in the United States?

A very fair question. My expectation is that while many parishes are forgetting or discarding legitimate customs, there has been no directive to abandon these customs. I ask U-C to provide evidence to support his claim (not that parishes have stopped doing this, but that there has been directive not to do it), or withdraw it.

I should have written the statement in the form of a question. Have the rubrics for Veneration/Exaltation of the Holy Cross in the Ruthenian Metropolian Church been changed?

I am I just witnessing parochial truncations?

We venerated the Holy Cross in the usual manner just last Sunday @ St. Basil's in Irving.
Now whether it did me any good remains to be seen. I hope God was glorified in the process.

We venerated the Holy Cross last Sunday with full prostrations at our new Byzantine Catholic mission. The priest who has had back surgery was unable to get down but the rest of the congregation did. That is a very moving and humbling experience for a Latin.

Actually not just on the day but "Chrestu Tvoem" "To Your Cross" is sung at the beginning and end of every service during the week (Wednesday Presanctified). Before Friday Presanctified we sing it once more, the Holy Cross is returned to the altar, and Presanctified begins.

Even us 'way out West' folks surely did venerate the cross for the third Sunday of the Great Fast. I know at the "proto-cathedral"(we were once known as the cathedral) in Sherman Oaks, CA we did, as well as Holy Angels in San Diego and likely in several other parishes in the Phoenix Eparchy. What's more, we did so after the Wed evening presanctified and 4th all souls Saturday!

You tend to assume that what happens in your area holds true for the entire Metropolia, this is simply untrue. Yes, there is great variety of practice (largely due to our Bishops not clearly stating what is liturgically correct).
