i thought some would find this of interest,
this is based off samples of European men of their Y chromosome haplogroup, genes you inherit directly and only from your father
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/73/Genetic_relations_of_European_nations.jpgyou will notice the South Slavs are significantly different from the northern Slavs.. the graph dosent show it but this map dose
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7b/R1A_map.jpgthat is only Croatia and Slovenia have a relatively large amount of the Slavic marker (R1a, about 25-30% compared to 50% in Poland and Russia) where as Bulgaria, Serbia et al almost totally lack it... this is most likely because the populations of those countries adopted the language of Slavic conquerors, the conquerors themselves contributing little to the genetic make up.
Hungary is similar, although speaking a Siberian language about only 5% have direct Asian genes (Haplogroup Q) and the rest is European - though I suspect this is because most of the original Hungarians were wiped out by the mongols (the king at the time invited Germans and Slavs to come and resettle after the invasions), also I suspect Hungarian genetics have far to go and unlike other countries I suspect Hungarian haplogroups varies dramatically village to village, you can sort of see what I mean by examining Hungary on the second link, since several papers have come out with widely different results. In one over 50% of Hungarian men were reported to be R1a, another over 50% were reported to be Haplogroup N... most recent show less than 3% haplogroup N and about 25% haplogroup R1a
