Here...

O most merciful Lord, the Giver of Life: we entreat You, look with compassion and tender mercy upon Your children who have been condemned to death by abortion. You who said, "Suffer the little children to come unto Me and forbid them not, for to such is the Kingdom of Heaven," do now, we humbly pray, grant the inheritance of Your Eternal Kingdom to the multitude of innocents who have perished in their mothers' wombs by the unjust judgement of men. We beseech you to soften the hearts of mothers and fathers who would seek to destroy Your little ones. Pour out upon them Your Divine grace that they may be convicted in their hearts and turn from their evil ways to embrace the True Faith. Upon those who have committed this cruelty: render not unto them according to their deeds, but rather have mercy upon them. Pierce their hearts with compunction and make their eyes stream with tears of repentence, joining their weeping with that of Rachel over her beloved children. For You are a merciful God, the Giver of Life and the Lover of Mankind, and to You we render glory, with Your eternal Father and All-Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen

Would anyone know of a prayer for the countless children who die from causes other than abortion, before natural birth or in the course of delivery? In addition to praying for them to receive their heavenly inheritance, for whom else might we pray? Parents? Extended families? Caregivers?

As for the beautiful prayer quoted above, might it be expanded to include the hope that the parents will be open in future to the gift of life and that the hearts of their families and others will be moved to provide needed help and assistance when they do?

The "Pastoral Care Companion" published by Concordia, the publishing house of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod has an excellent burial liturgy for stillborn and unbaptized children.

Among the prayers:

"Heavenly Father, Your Son bore all our griefs and carried all our sorrows. Strengthen the faith of these grieving parents and all who bear this heavy burden. Help them to rely on Your boundless mercy and to trust that their little one, who has been gathered into Your loving arms, will rise on the Last Day; through Jesus Christ..."

"O Lord Jesus Christ, by your three-day rest in the tomb You hallowed the graves of all your children, promissing resurrection to our mortal bodies. Bless this grave and grant that the body of this child may sleep here in peace until You awaken him/her to glory, when he/she shall see You face to face and know the splendor of the eternal God, for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever."
