OK! A Latin deacon ask for the best title of the complete Protoevangelium of St James. He wants one that the translation would not have been messed with. The person that it is for is Protestant, and her husband is a pastor. I know I have seen a longer name for the book. I understand it is about 200 pages long.

There is no "full" or "official" title. It is variously known as:

1. The Gospel of James
2. The Infancy Gospel of James
3. The Protoevangelium (Pre-Gospel) of James

All of these are interchangeable.

I'm not sure what you mean by a text that is "messed with". There are a number of English translations dating back 200 years. I'm not aware of any controversy in the translations.

Protevangelium of James (PJ) is the title given by the Latin translator Postel in 1552. The manuscript tradition offers a wide variety of titles. The oldest manuscript is titled "Nativity of Mary, Revelation of James." The attribution to James the brother of the Lord is universal, but almost certainly pseudonymous. The PJ is widely regarded as the earliest and most influential of the apocryphal Nativity books. Thomas' "Nativity of Mary" is the only account that may predate the PJ, but this is the minority opinion.
