Steve makes a very valid point, one that is based on a rule of long standing at this site.

References to specific clergy will include use of the individual's proper title or honorific - and that rule is not applicable only to those whom we like - it applies equally to Archbishop John Ireland as it does to the most respected and popular among our own hierarchs.

Sorry, but I'm an academic, and academics generally don't use titles when referring to sources. Cardinal Stickler wrote an academic book, hence is being judged as an academic, not as a churchman. And Archbishop Ireland is dead. We tend not to refer to dead churchmen by their titles unless it is relevant.

Nobody promoting celibacy within the Latin Church anymore has any wish or desire to impose it on the Eastern Churches. The Eastern praxis is an afterthought in the discussion.

When people start talking about the "apostolic origins" of priestly celibacy, some do.

See this Zenit interview here: [zenit.org]

Married priests are an exception and the Church is increasingly convinced that they must remain so, according to a spiritual theology professor at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross.

Father Laurent Touze explained the foundations of priestly celibacy when he spoke at a two-day conference held last week at Rome's Pontifical University of the Holy Cross. The conference, "Priestly Celibacy: Theology and Life," was sponsored by the Congregation for the Clergy as an event for the Year for Priests....

Father Touze: No, because the Church is understanding more and more the relation between priesthood, episcopate and celibacy. It is something that could be likened to the revelation of a dogma, though it isn't so at this time; one tends increasingly to understand that a practice must be promoted among all priests and also among Eastern Catholic priests which is truly similar to the one lived in the first centuries.

Fr. Touze is not part of a fringe group. You can buy books on this subject from Ignatius Press. frown

Sorry, Stuart,

You'll just have to humor we poor, beknighted non-academics - or suffer the indignity of having your scholarly, offending posts dealt with accordingly.

You choose, but I suggest that you not buck me on this. The unwashed, illiterate masses can be so common in their dealings with those who breath rarified air.

Many years,

Neil

Certainly chutzpah on Fr. Touze's part, considering that there is absolutely no evidence pointing to celibacy being the rule of the early Church, and that all the studies which try to prove it rely entirely on each other for support. But I'm sure Father Touze knows better than the Pope on this matter.
