"Zions"

These are three photos related to the thread on Zions.

The first shows a nun with a katzion (hand censer) in the right hand, and a church-shaped object in the left. Source unknown.

The second is from Mount Sinai. The deacon are holding church-shaped gold boxes. Notice they also are wearing what appears to be a specially designed vozduch, with a hole for the head. This is consistent with the iconographic witness of having a large cloth over the left shoulder.

The third is from, I believe, a Greek Orthodox monastery in the US. This shows an incensation that is performed in Greek monasteries by the monastics, not by the celebrating clergy. The monks are not holding "zions" but they do have the large cloth over their shoulders.

Fascinating. On what occasions is it permitted for one who is not a priest or deacon (in this case, a nun) to do the incensing of a church?
