With the football season winding down and the Spurs taking a night off my wife finally let me use the TV to watch the Russian movie OCTPOD (Cyrillic spelling). The movie is in Russian with English subtitles and a page of instructions on how to get the subtitles since all of the options are in Russian.

If you haven't seen it, it is the story of a elderly monk at a tiny isolated monastery who is either crazy or is a mystic. The movie is visually beautiful.

Some people compare it to "In Great Silence." Though both are beautiful films they are completely different. OCTPOD actually has a plot and story line.

The dialog is overwhelmingly prayerful. Very Russian Orthodox and very sympathetic to the Church. There is a strong does of Orthodox theology under girding the entire movie.

Definitely a must see. I am handing on to my Priest and then letting it circulate in the congregation.

Hello
re...OSTPOB

island in Russian or in Ukrainian is

" остров "

I think that you need the Cyrillic for "S" to be "c"

A lovely little movie indeed. Anyone who loves the Orthodox faith and monasticism should go see it.

FYI: 'Ostrov' in latin script.

I was pleasantly surprised to find this movie available on Netflix. I look forward to watching it in the near future.

I think that is pretty obvious. However, OCTPOB isn't.

OK. The name of the movie is OCTPOB (which is Cyrillic without the special font.) Ostrov is the Russian word written in western script. The Island is the translation of either of those words.

The point was not my poor spelling, my lack of an alternative font or my lack of ability to pronounce or understand Russian or Ukrainian for that matter. My point was this is a wonderful movie.

Jim - I didn't mean to imply anything of the sort. I was merely pointing out phonetically for those unaware that the word would not be pronounced as 'okt-pob' in English, but rather as 'os-trov'. Sorry for any confusion.

It is a wonderful movie.

Thanks. We are having an accreditation team on campus today and I must admit I have been in a hyper state of sensitivity the last couple of days. I think I need to take a couple extra anti depression meds.

It is a great movie and I think we will try to use it in the Catholic Student Association to get them more familiar with Eastern Christianity.
