Alex the Papalist I don't think so. I don't think the new arms has been chosen yet. It sure looks like the same staff (in fact, JPI and Paul used it too) unless there are multiple identical copies. Nick

Alex the Papalist [/QB] Dear Alex, I believe that this staff was that of Pope John Paul I. (and then the late John Paul II) I recall hearing that each Pope may choose a new staff, but it only seems fitting that Benedict XVI would take the staff of his predecessors. Brad

Dear Brad and Nicholas,
That's great!
Are there online Catholic stores where one may purchase the special Crucifix at the top of the staff?
I have a decade rosary that has that Crucifix on one end and a medal with the Pope and Our Lady of Czestochowa on the other end.
Alex

Dear Friends, In addition to all the blue and white checkered Bavarian flags waving yesterday at the Pope's installation, there were also "Royal Bavarian" flags with the coat of arms of the King of Bavaria on them (I have a copy that I fly at the in-laws' cottage). Bavaria still has her king . . . Incognitus would know more about this, since he appreciates all monarchies (except the British one that he says isn't British . . . ). Alex

Dear Dave, Well, it was a beautiful explanation! All about the Good Shepherd and how the Pallium represents all of us who are placed on the Shoulders of Christ! The last three weeks have really turned me into a Papist (not just "in communion with Rome") Do you think my Papal arms pin will clash with my Three-Bar Cross one if I wear them together? Alex

It was indeed very interesting and pleasing to see Pope Benedict XVI wearing the ancient form of the pallium. He has continued to surprise and impress me during his first days. Regarding the Greek Catholic Bishops wearing real omophors many of the Melkites, Romanians and Ukrainians do wear them. The only Ruthenian (USA) bishop to wear one on a consistent basis is Bishop John of Parma. The new Slovak Bishops and Bishop of Mukachevo also wear them.

Dear MJ,
Well, when I saw them put the traditional Pallium on him - I was really awe-struck.
A man who knows and deeply appreciates history and historic tradition!
It was as if he were being enthroned as the universal pontiff for BOTH East and West - as if the schism of 1054 AD had been healed . . .

I'd bet that the crozier His Holiness carried was/is a copy. There were pictures of Pope John Paul II being casketed on the internet and it appeared that he had his crozier tucked under his left arm as they were veiling his face with a white cloth.

Bob: Yes, I saw that too, unless someone removed it before they finally sealed the coffin? Or, since some media wags say that Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, is a "clone" of Pope John Paul II, then His Holiness is entitled to a "carbon copy" of his predecessor's crozier! Amado
