It is interseting that Pope Benedict XVI has chosen a larger sized Pallium, which is very reminiscent of the original version, (a.k.a. Omophorion)worn by bishops of both East and West! Axios! Axios! Axios! Christos Anesti! Alithos Anesti! Ung-Certez

His pallium folds in the ancient fashion, and it even hangs nicely in the back! It is definately in line with what can be seen in ancient mosaics, frescos, etc. Maybe some Greek Catholic hierarchs will take note. http://origin.ewtn.com/pope/celebration/multimedia/inauguration/inaug7.asp Dave

Well, it has been a few months since we debated the merits of a buttoned-together vs. sewn-together omophorion. I mean, it's a major issue, and one that has implications the world over! :p
Here's something I noticed: after the imposition of the pallium and ring, the Greek choir sang the Fimi/Polychronion of the new Pope. They called him "Panagiotatos" (All Holiness, title used by the EP) and not "Agiotatos" (Holiness, the standard title for the Pope of Rime). I just thought that was interesting.

Good afternoon!
Today CNS ran a story which gave information on the new pallum.
"With Pope Benedict XVI's first public Mass, the Vatican inaugurated new rites, rituals and vestments.
Developed during the pontificate of Pope John Paul II, the changes were kept as drafts until Pope Benedict approved them the day after his April 19 election, said Msgr. Crispino Valenziano, a consultant to the office of papal liturgical ceremonies.
...The biggest visual changes in the new rites, he said, are the fisherman's ring and the pallium, the woolen stole symbolizing a bishop's authority.
Both, he said, are based on ancient designs.
The fisherman's gold ring, incised with a scene of St. Peter casting out his net, is similar to the old rings that popes used also as seals. Designed by the Rome Association of Goldsmiths, it does not have a gem in it, Msgr. Valenziano said.
Pope Benedict's pallium is similar to that worn by popes in the first millennium, he said.
...The new pallium wraps around the pope's shoulders and hangs down his left side just below his knees. The end piece is made of black silk, a symbol of "the black sheep which the shepherd rescues and carries over his shoulder back to the flock," Msgr. Valenziano said."
The story also commented on some other changes to the installation liturgy.
"The service began inside St. Peter's Basilica with all the concelebrating cardinals forming a circle around the main altar. Pope Benedict and the patriarchs of the Eastern Catholic churches went down to St. Peter's tomb under the altar, paying their tribute to the apostle."
IMHO, the new pallium is beautiful.
Peace,
Charles

Slava! Slava! Slava! Maybe now we can get EC bishops to start wearing great omophoria instead of 'bibs' - "Vladyko, if you wear a real omophorion you can be just like the Pope!" No idea how to convince them to use the small omophorion... Σώσον, Κύριε, καί διαφύλαξον ηάς από τών Βασιλιάνικων τάξεων!

Now, KO63AP, people might start thinking you had an agenda here...
Gaudior, who knows that you do!

Gaudior, who knows that you do! My 'agenda' is set by Rome. Nec plus, nec minus, nec aliter! See numerous documents eminating from the Eternal City directing the Eastern Churches to restore their traditions, etc. Was bibs in 19th century "old country"? Is OUTRAGE! :p Σώσον, Κύριε, καί διαφύλαξον ηάς από τών Βασιλιάνικων τάξεων!

I have seen Patriarch Lubomyr I use a small omophorion and Bishop Basil of Stamford uses one very often.

Dear brothers and sisters,
While watching the EWTN live broadcast, I noticed that the pallium looks a bit different from what I am used to seeing. And using the Icon of St. Nicolas of Myra as reference, it looks considerably similar than what our late beloved Pope John Paul II had.
I like what it looks now... it feels good seeing that on him even though I am not familiar with the deeper meaning of it.

Dear Friends,
Yes, His Holiness' large Pallium is most beautiful - I was going to point it out for comment here and Ung-Certez beat me to it! (Good for you!)
He wears it so well and it makes him look SO dignified that it brings one to tears (not to mention that it makes him look like an Eastern Hierarch, at least for me it does).
His explanation of the significance of the Pallium was excellent - it wasn't a boring exposition at all and his use of his hands when he speaks is right on.
And I loved the reading of the Gospel in Greek by the GC deacon and the Pope's singing out the Greek response as well!
May I ask a few questions of those in the know?
I saw a Papal coat of arms behind the Pope during the Inaugural Liturgy yesterday - is that his own new coat of arms? Is it online somewhere?
The Pope's staff that he had with him yesterday- is it the staff of St John Paul the Great? Does every Pope get to have his own type of staff if he so wishes?
