This was sent to me by my GodPapa - and it made me laugh O! Lenten time of fast and self-denial
that brings the pilgrim closer to his home
by teaching us that sin must be reviled
and yearly calls the sinner to atone.
But Lord, why must Thou take the meat?
Those other foods You gave us can’t compete.
O! To have a steak or Shepherd’s pie,
perhaps some chicken wings, a slice of ham?
It is a shame Your creatures have to die,
but what a tasty creature is the lamb!
But Lord, why must you take the meat?
‘Tis such a juicy, chewy, treat! ........ the rest can be read here - Ode to meat on the Second Friday in Lent [ gettingoffthepot.wordpress.com]

Oh Anhelyna--that is hillarious!!!
I need to be honest in saying that I don't miss meat all that much, but I do know some others (men ofcourse) who do, so I will be sending it on along to them! :=)
Your godfather has quite the wit--would he have been a friend of dear Father Serge, of blessed memory? This is definitely something I can picture Father Serge enjoying!
Be well-- Alice

I've actually just found how my GodPapa got hold of this - a former Byzcath Poster [ probably what we could term an 'inactive member' ] posted it on 'FaceAche'

The author of this 'ode' definitely wants some meat-- It is in every refrain! LOL! I do pray that he will be okay, since we have so many more weeks to go! My husband starts getting really antsy around two to three weeks before Pascha...

O! Lenten time of fast and self-denial that brings this pilgrim closer to her home by teaching us that sin must be reviled and yearly calls the sinner to atone:
I say farewell to beef and lamb; No egg noodles with cheese for me; Not even one tiny slice of ham for this 40-day journey.
I understand that all good things have their time and season. I know the peace repentance brings, and I embrace the reason.
Honoring God is an important task Still, Great Lent, this I must ask -- Just how bad would it be for me to slip some cream into my coffee?

Christ is in our midst!! He is and always will be!!
It's interesting but I find I am nourished and satisfied but never feel as heavily weighted down when I eat less meat and more vegetable protein. Go figure.

"One day all our ethnic traits ... will have disappeared. Time itself is seeing to this. And so we can not think of our communities as ethnic parishes, ... unless we wish to assure the death of our community."

Ah, my dear sister speaks for me Many years, Neil As ridiculous as it may sound, I miss cream in my coffee more than anything else! I can do with out the meat and cheese and butter, but ugh ... black coffee really does leave a bitter taste in my mouth!

I can cope without meat , I cope without dairy [ though I really miss my butter - I do enjoy a little bread with my butter ] What I really miss is the few ounces of milk for my morning porridge

Morrissey of the Smiths once opined that "Meat is Murder."
I don't buy into this, carnivore that I am.
"Meat is Burgers." say I
But never on a Friday. Meat, I mean,

A number of years ago my vegan daughter lived with us and got us to drink soy milk. We drink the one flavored with vanilla and cook with the plain one. Even though I milked goats for a number of years I only made cheese with the milk and still drank the soy milk. I now prefer it to any animal milk. Try it on the porridge or anything where you would use milk. You will grow to like it a lot.

I'm a vegetarian, so I don't care about the meat. It's the dairy that I greatly miss.

My motto is:
It animals were not meant to be eaten, they would not be made of meat.
