It has been reported by the Holy Synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church that His Holiness Pope Shenouda III has reposed in the Lord March 17, 2012.

Eternal memory!

Eternal Memory!

May the Lord hold the Coptic Christians closely to His heart now at this most difficult time.

What! I'm just learning about this! shocked

Just as Blessed John Paul II has been the only Pope many Catholics have known, so is Pope Shenouda for the Copts...in fact, Pope Shenouda is the only Coptic Pope that many Catholics have known as well.

May his memory be eternal.

May he be with the living God. May all the sacred truths and mysteries he proclaimed and lived by now become complete, unveiled reality for him. May all the sufferings he bore on behalf of his persecuted faith community now come to full fruition in his life.

He came to the DFW area several years ago and an (Eastern) Orthodox priest I knew finagled me an invitation to the banquet held in his honor. I was presented to him and asked him to bless a Coptic-style hand-cross I posessed. I later gave it to my (now deceased) cousin who was OCA and had given some thought to switching over to the Coptic Orthodox Church. He never did: he followed my advice and reamined OCA but died suddenly at the age of 38 from a heart attack.

Anyway, when His Holiness was introduced by the mayor of the DFW suburb the banquet was held in, the poor guy - who was probably some kind of non-liturgical Protestant and didn't know Polish from polish when it came to Eastern Christianity, said with a very heavy Texas accent,, "I'm happy to welcome to our community Pope Shenoudy of the Coptic Orthodontic Church."

I almost fell off my chair from the urge to burst into hilarious laughter but nobody else there seemed to pick up on this verbal blunder, so I stifled myself. Thank God.

May the memory of the Lord's servant, the High Priest Shenouda, be eternal and may our Coptic brethren be comforted that he is with his God.

May the luminous memory of Pope Shenouda be eternal! May our merciful God and Savior comfort the martyred Coptic Church, now orphaned of her beloved Abba!

I believe H.H. Pope Shenouda's 40th. day will be (appropriately) on the feast of St. Mark, Apostle and Evangelist: April 25, 2012.
