To facilitate replying to a variety of queries raised in a single thread, the above was extracted from a longer post by Hannah, a new forum member. While I realize that there are a number of threads, recent and old, which offer great replies to Hannah's query, we all know that it can be difficult to track these using our search engine (not our best feature). I'm confident though that we can rally to offer Hannah some insights.

If you're interested in technology-based prayer applications, you might want to check out the Geek Hall subforum. There are links there to several. At the bottom of the page, I suggest increasing the time range of threads that you wish to view.

I think the default is 'threads active in the past 3 months'. I recommend using the drop-down option to increase the timeframe to either six months or a year. You'll get a selection of topics more in line with what you might find of interest.

There is a Byzantine Daily Office, but I would suggest you get a copy of 'Anthology for Worship' published by the Sheptytsky Institute in Ottawa.

It contains the text for the Liturgies of St John Chrysostom and St Basil, prayers or preparation for and after Communion, a daily morning and evening prayer, and a guide to confession. Also included are the various Troparia/Kontakia for Sundays and their associated tones, as well as a compilation of hymns.

Well worth the purchase.

I still put forward my favourite - the Old Orthodox Prayer Book from Erie . It can be found in many places online as well as directly from Erie

My personal favorite is (of course) Byzantine Daily Worship. Aside from having all the service texts and prayers, the introduction by Archbishop Raya is a marvelous primer on eastern spirituality. It was, in fact, my introduction to eastern spirituality some 30 years ago, 10 years before I actually became a Melkite.

I would also heartily recommend the Anthology as a first prayer book as it contains the Little Hours, preparation for Holy Communion and Confession, feasting and fasting seasons, in addition to music and propers for the Divine Liturgy. A gem and treasure.

If I had to be on a deserted island with three and only three prayer books, they would likely be the UGCC Anthology, the Stamford Horologion and the Old Orthodox Prayer Book.


Along with Hapgood, Raya was my first English prayerbook as well.

In addition to our prayer book "Let Us Pray to the Lord: Volume I the Daily Office", Eastern Christian Publications also now offers the Byzantine Daily Office as an email subscription with Morning and Evening Prayer and the four Hours with all the changeable parts included according the Ruthenian Typicon (calendar of saints, feasts, etc.)

And Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, and the Sixth Hour are available in a more generic form (seven versions for each day of the week) as audio recordings, either on CD or by iTunes download.

I purchased the "Anthology for Worship" through the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Parma for $60.00; it was a lot more everywhere else. Would it be fairly redundant for me to also purchase bdw? I'm excited for it to come; maybe I'll feel a little less lost at Divine Liturgy
