The icons appear to be by the same hand as St. Michael's in Binghamton and St. John's in Perth Amboy, NJ. It is both sad that the South Fork parish closed, but a source of joy that this icon screen, which survived through the difficulties of the 20th century when many did not, will live on.

It's wonderful news that the iconostasis was preserved.

A couple of questions.

1. Does anyone have a date as to when St Michael's in South Fork closed? I don't recollect seeing any reference to that anywhere.

2. If anyone lives in the Tarentum area and has an opportunity to visit Ss Peter and Paul, I'd be very grateful for an exterior and interior photo of the temple for use in its directory entry. If so, they can be e-mailed to me at ec_parish_webmaster@yahoo.com.

In reading the article, this remark struck me as somewhat amusing (easily amused today, I guess) ...

Quote
Without revealing details of the transfer, Rev. Wesley Mash, pastor of Saints Peter and Paul, said he worked out an agreement to have the screen moved to Tarentum.

umm, don't want to let those transfer secrets out - lots of concern that they'll make their way into IconoLeaks confused

Many years,

Neil

Neil - there was a short thread here around the time of the closure

Closure: St. Michael's, South Fork, PA

The link to the final parish bulletin is still live. Per the bulletin, the final Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Nov. 13, 2011.

I live not very far from Tarentum and would be happy to visit the church and take the requested photos. Remember, though, I am not Karsh of Ottawa. I will also call the Chancery to get a closing date. Please don't post my offer in IconoLeaks. Ecclesiastical secrecy is an highly developed art form here in Western Pennsylvania.

They are in a westernized style which was popular in both the 18th and 19th century Russian and Austro-Hungarian empires. For example, St. Isasic's in St. Petersburg and Christ the Saviour in Moscow as well as their contemporary Greek Catholic cathedrals in cities like L'viv, Uzhorod and Oresev are adorned in similar styles. The immigrants brought this with them to the new world, hence you will see similar art in older OCA, UOC, UGCC, BCC and ACROD parishes which were built in the first seventy or so years of the 20th century.

Thanks to both Joe and John for the info. I apparently missed John's original thread on the subject.

Gee, John, if you can't assure me of Karsh of Ottawa quality, I don't know confused - umm, wait, I just checked with Karsh and he's booked, and Anhelyna can't get a flight in time, so I guess I can accept your offer biggrin this time.

Thanks, my friend and mum's the word cool .

Many years,

Neil
