I understand that Metropolitan Jonah has resigned, under some pressure.

[OCA] Metropolitan Jonah Tenders Resignation [oca.org]

I admit that I am unfamiliar with many of the details, but had heard there were tensions for some time.

Why do you surmise that this will be, or at least signals, the demise of the OCA?

Thanks for that, Sbdn. John. I don't know why his resignation must signal the impending demise of the OCA, though.

But why the resignation? Does anyone know possible reasons?

I can only echo Our Lady's Slave's words. I have both a dear friend and a cousin who serve as priests in the OCA.

I think it is the fact the Met Jonah was trying to bring the OCA back under Moscow and that he was acting like a primate in the usa. Unfortunately the Americans still dont like autocracy. Believe it or not they think the church is a democracy. Imagine that.

Why would Met. Jonah try to bring the O.C.A. back under Moscow? After all the O.C.A. IS an Autocephalus church. The whole point of that is to make the Orthodox Churches from the different Jurisdictions into One American Orthodox Church with our own Patriarch. The O.C.A. was the first step. The Antiochian Orthodox Church has in the past few years gained Autonomy in the United States, from the Mother Church in Damascus, the next step would be to be our own head, like the O.C.A. After that the other Jurisdictions in America should follow suit, then, all the Churches could elect our own Patriarch making us TRULY an American Orthodox Church.

From an outsider but friendly point of view it looks like the OCA lurches from one crisis to another. But then, what Church doesn't? I am sad over this and am glad to pray they regain the stability Christ wants them to have.

Indeed. Every Church has its crisis. Everywhere today there is some sort of controversy.

Prayers for Metropolitan Jonah and may God grant him many years.

Prayers as well for our brothers and sisters of the OCA.

Please, as Alice has already asked
