The icon we venerated today was of both St Mary Magdalene and St Martha. Both are holding crosses, Mary Magdalene also has the usual jar of ointment. I was taught that when someone holds a cross in their icon it denotes they were a martyr. I didn't know there was a tradition that Mary and Martha are martyrs. Can someone enlighten me?

Perhaps in this case it reflects the "white martyrdom" of St. Mary Magdalene or perhaps that she was the first witness to the Holy Resurrection.

The icon of her we venerated today at St. Basil's in Irving depicted her holding the unguent-jar in one hand and a red pysanka/margutis/Easter egg in the other.
