Something in the thread "Re: Went to a Russian Orthodox church, comments and requests!" made me go back and update a post I made [tinyurl.com] in the photos section at the time of the annual OCA pilgrimage to Fort Ross in July].

In looking at the Fort Ross site etc. I see 2012 will be the Bicentennial. They have set up a separate website Fort Ross 200 [fortross200.org] and also that they are on Facebook at "Friends of Fort Ross State Historic Park".

I notice in the Calendar [fortross200.org] section they say:
Quote
August 2012: Church and Cemetery
* August 12: The "Day of Russia" – Fort Ross will commemorate the original Colony Ross dedication. The Russian Orthodox churches in the United States and Russia will hold a unified church service at the Holy Trinity Chapel at Fort Ross SHP. The Churches will also host a dedication ceremony to honor those who lived and died at Ross Colony and to dedicate the new interpretive panels to be placed at the cemetery [tinyurl.com]. Fort Ross SHP will also dedicate a bench in the cemetery. Lecture and Performance Series will take place at the Presidio (August 16), the Sonoma County Museum (August 17), and at Fort Ross (August 18).

Normally the ROCOR folks make an annual pilgrimage to Fort Ross on Memorial Day and the OCA does so on Fourth of July. This combined event along with Churches from Holy Mother Russia is really very exciting and first that I've heard of this. So, stay tuned for more updates! smile

FYI due to the crisis in the CA state budget the Visitor Center and Fort Compound have been closed Mon.- Fri. 12/1/010 until 6/30.

A wonderful slide show here on Fr. Sergei [facebook.com] Sveshnikov's Facebook. I assumed some people would come up with some good shots. Mine were "You had to be there" style. If you get to #31 of 158 in his series, [facebook.com] I'm closest to the camera, left, furthest from the action, rust color paisley scarf on my head, black jacket, man with child on his shoulders in front of me. Gives you an idea of why photos I took of the Liturgy were mainly a sea of heads. On my right is my tall husband with white hair, and to his right with the long brown hair, another parishioner from our Russian Greek Catholic parish.

It was a wonderful day!. I will eventually upload pictures of the three plaques that were recently installed in the cemetery.

I personally was quite delighted when I noticed Met Gerasimos arriving during the Liturgy. I never got close enough to him to get his blessing. Another priest from the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco was with him, whom I have seen many times but not sure where he serves.

It was a glorious day and the weather cooperated well, staying chilly during the time when clergy were vested for the Liturgy, and the memorial at the cemetery. After that the sun came out and it was pretty toasty.

The Liturgy was mainly, but not entirely, in Slavonic with a fair amount of antiphonal singing with the two choirs. Some of that was one choir in Slavonic and the other in English. There was also the Trisagion in Greek. smile

I was also delighted to see again, and visit with briefly, now Fr Deacon Kyrill, from Mexico, whom I met at St Nicholas OCA on the altar feast last year.

The Holy Virgin Cathedral of SF has posted a number of wonderful photos [facebook.com] from the Fort Ross Bicentennial Concelebration.

I enjoy seeing these since we could only see heads and the tops of the ripidion, and tips of the trikiri & dikiri, which made me think this must have been part of their origins-- let the people know where the bishop or other heirarchs are when you can't see or hear a thing in the sea of people.

There were two processions you can see in these two sets of pictures. The first was when we processed around the outside of the stockade and each of the four sides was blessed.

After that was the procession on the trail out towards the ocean and back inland, and finally up to the cemetery. I've just uploaded photos of the three new informational plaques that were installed in the cemetery.

The OCA site has just linked to another slide show [dowoca.org]. In slides 5 and 6 you can see Met Gerasimos, Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco. It looks to me like Bishop Benjamin (OCA) SF he's walking with.
Slide 12 is Fr Stephan Meholick of St Nicholas OCA parish [stnicholasmarin.org], known from years back to someone on this forum. I imagine that is his set of portable bells, along with the single large bell that is permanently at Ft Ross. He and Fr. Lawrence of St. Seraphim's parish [saintseraphim.com] in Santa Rosa are wonderful bell ringers and provided plenty of ringing. When not on the bells during the Liturgy they were in the choir where I know Fr Stephan prefers to be and I suspect Fr Lawrence does also.

St. Seraphim's parish has posted an really excellent slideshow [saintseraphim.com]. Fr Lawrence in slides 2,3,39,44 Fr Stephan slide 9,41,65. Met Gerasimos in 52,54 and 61
