Well, same could be said probably during 1930s and 1940s Germany as well, when you know who was in power. I'm not sure if him or his regime were persecuting the Eastern Catholics or Orthodox that might have been living or worshiping in the Fatherland (considering that might have been one of the first countries that the faithful escaped to during the Soviet times, probably), although America was really the country most of the faithful came to. Now I'm sure after World War II, the West Germans probably welcomed the Orthodox and Eastern Catholics with open arms, while East Germany was under that strict Soviet code. Although I'm not sure what role Germany would play in nowadays with the rest of Europe. That's another country outside of Eastern Europe where Christianity had its ups and downs.
