Dear Brethren in Christ:

My family and I have been blessed to be able to regularly attend a local parish of the Byzantine Catholic Church (Ruthenian) over the last few years. Looking over their calendar (published by Byzantine Seminary Press) I don't see St. Photius the Great on there (although there is another Photius on a different day). Does anyone know why this is?

Thanks

Well, if you're from a Latin Rite background, you will notice that there are different Saint Days and Feast Days on the calendar in the Byzantine Rite. Now in the Ukrainian Church, you'll have even more feast days with the Saints and Martyrs from Kievan-Rus'. So even among those in the Eastern Rite, you'll have flavors of the Byzantine Church that will observe even more saints than in the others, or less, and just the basic saint feasts (by "basic" I'm talking saints days celebrated across the board in all Eastern Rite Churches).

Back in the day he was removed from the calendar by Rome. Fr. Francis Dvornik showed this need not be.
