Good Evening:

Slava Isusu Khrystu!

I am wondering if any of the good members of the Byzantine Forum could assist me. I am trying to locate writings by the late Archpriest John J. Mowatt. I believe that he was a priest of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Stamford. He was also connected with the Byzantine Rite Chapel at Domus Pacis in Fatima, Portugal. I think that he wrote booklets about the Byzantine Catholic Rite. I think he even may have written a booklet "Looking East". I think that his booklets were more for Ukrainian Catholics but I think Ruthenian Catholics would appreciate his writings.

Thank you so much!

John,

When I first met him, Mitred Archimandrite John (Mowatt), of blessed memory, was Administrator of the former and much-beloved Our Lady of Kazan Russian Greek-Catholic Mission, in South Boston. He served the Divine Liturgy according to the Great Russian Rescension at my grammar school, during the Chair of Unity Octave, back when I was a fifth or sixth grader in the mid-50s. It was my introduction to Eastern Catholicism and the Byzantine Rite.

He later served at the Byzantine Chapel at Fatima, which he founded, as best I recollect. As you indicate, he was subsequently incardinated to the Eparchy of Stamford of the Ukrainians, during which time he pastored St Michael's UGCC in Woonsocket.

He was very close to Melkite Archbishop Joseph (Tawil), of blessed memory, and I believe that it was Patriarch Maximos V, also of blessed memory, who conferred the dignity of Mitred Archimandrite on him. When Archimandrite John reposed, the Funeral for a Priest was concelebrated by Melkite and Ukrainian clergy at the Melkite Cathedral of Our Lady of the Annunciation in Boston. He's interred at Mt Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA.

Archimandrite John authored a small book titled "The Holy and Miraculous Icon of Our Lady of Kazan", copies of which appear at www.abebooks.com [abebooks.com] from time to time. He also edited "Looking East (Quarterly of the Byzantine Center at Fatima, Portugal)" - copies of individual numbers of that publication also can occasionally be found at abebooks.

Many years,

Neil

There are two other books worth mentioning (both are out-of-print though):

1) A Heart for All by Rev. Joao Venancio is a collection of talks on the message of Our Lady of Fatima given at Domus Pacis (the Blue Army international headquarters) on August 16-22, 1971. Among the speakers was Fr. Mowatt, whose talk is included in the book. This includes color photos of the Kazan icon (which was enshrined at the chapel for a time), the dedication of the Byzantine chapel, and a rare color photo of late Russian Catholic Bishop Andrei Katkoff holding the Kazan icon.

2)Dear Bishop: Memoirs of the Author Concerning the History of the Blue Army by John Haffert. This book includes how the Byzantine Chapel in Domus Pacis was founded (includes some black and white photos of the chapel, of Fr. Mowatt, of Fr. Januarius Izzo, and of Bishop Katkoff).

Interesting! In doing a Google search for images of Archmandrite John Mowatt, I came across these photos for sale on Ebay:
Photo 1 [i1010.photobucket.com]
Photo 2 [i1010.photobucket.com]
Photo 3 [i1010.photobucket.com]
Photo 4 [i1010.photobucket.com]

If you click on this list [ebay.com] , you will see all four photos. Clicking on their respective links will lead to details of where the photo was taken.

gc,

Thanks for those links, which reminded me that Our Lady of Kazan Mission wasn't originally in South Boston.

A photo of Archimandrite John late in life is here
