Dear Friend,

Various Christian traditions will use a mat or small rug in church to do prostrations on, so as not to soil the right hand, in particular, with which we cross ourselves.

(The Russian Old Believers use a pillow for this purpose, but a small mat would be fine.)

One would cross oneself and then make a full prostration to the ground placing one's hands on the rug or mat and touching one's forehead to one's hands.

Alex
